up-plating

I weighted my M/H as part of the preparation for going to France and it was too close to the GVW. to be comfortable when fully loaded ( wine :-/. Plate weight changing, I was by informed by many, is a nightmare ). But, so as recommended by @heisenberg, I started the process of up-plating on the 19 Aug 2023, with an Email to Dee, from Van Weight Engineering.
( vanweightengineering@gmail.com ), and completed their application form, including all the details asked for. I received the up-plated details back from Dee on the 20th at 07.00 ( Sunday ) , and having sorted the payment, had the paperwork and everything ready to for the post on the 24th , but couldn't afford to take the chance of going to France without a logbook, ( just as well I was only 6 hours in France when I was stopped and asked for all my paperwork ). so I didn't post the information to Shannon until the the 18th September and received my new up-plated logbook back on the 24th. my new chassis plate arrived in the post on the 10th while I was away.
The process was Hassle free with the Help of Dee and Claire and took 36 days ( including 20 of which we were in France).
Van Weight Engineering, made the whole thing so simple, I could not recommend more.

Glad it worked out well for you Martin. I found Dee & Claire in VWE extremely helpful and would highly recommend also.

I'll put it together. its tomorrow.

Firstly have a look at your original weight plate ( not the Motorhome Manufactures ) add the front and rear axle weights from this plate, this is the max you can go without modification. if this heavier than the weight on your logbook, that,s probably the gain.
( if its not, you are in trouble you need to have it looked at. )

what you need.
The weight of your M/H,from an official weighbridge with the paperwork to prove. Front Axle,Rear Axle, overall, with a photo to show each stage of the vehicle on the weighbridge. ( Best done Full tank, gas, no water, or people, but all the rest of your stuff )
Photo's of.
The Vehicle on the Weighbridge.
Weight plates from the OEM, the Motorhome manufacturer, and any other plates like Al-co.
Front and rear axle suspension arrangement, and any add on's ( like Airbags ).
Vehicle its self including the Reg plate.
Logbook. and CVRT.
Chassis number.
Download the application form. fill it out ( it's self explanatory ) with all the details of your M/H.

Send everything over, it may take two Emails, because of all the photo's etc, the estimate and advise is Free, the charge, is only if you are going to go ahead.

Cost £ 276. + weighbridge cost €10 - €20 + registered post €10.

Obviously If you had to any modification this cost would have to be considered. I have fitted Airbags to the Rear, but for the up-plate there were not Necessary, they Just make it more comfortable to drive, on my return from our recent trip to France, the supplies lowered the back end, by approx 50mm and no difference in handling. ( no snail on your back feeling ,Truck drivers will understand this. :-/ )

This was my original plate, showing the 3880, when you add axle 1 and 2 you get 4230. So a gain of 350 kg without any modification, which gives me peace of mind.

When you're running at the sum of the two axles it's important to spread the load, otherwise if too much is at the back of the vehicle, which is quite common, the rating of the rear axle could be exceeded.
While the weight of the vehicle could be within its GVW you could still be done for exceeding the rated axle weight.

Mine's plated at 3500kg but there was a no cost factory of plating it at 3850kg. The axel weights add up to 4300kg which probably accounts for the garage overhanging the rear axel adding an extra moment on the rear axel.

If a vans been up plated by previous owner is this ok nothing to worry about as long as it’s on the logbook, I think what I mean is there’s nothing sorta illegal or dodgy a new owner has to be careful of, I’m looking around at the minute, the dealer was hinting that they do a couple a week ,nothing to worry about, might even be cheaper tax , any thoughts

Like as has been said, if it's on the logbook, it's legal, the question I would ask, is why was it up plated, and what modification if any was done, to get it passed.

You haven't mentioned what it's up-plated to. If it's over 3.5t I assume you've got a C1 Licence

If a GB resident tax for over 3500kgs will be circa £165 per year but will have different speed limits as it will be classed as private HGV

Just for info, in ROI the T&I rates are the same, but the speed is classed as Truck, 80k and 90k. The CVRT is Truck also.

According to gov.uk the v5c logbook was last issued on 20 June 2022 , is this probably when it was changed,

A VERY common misconception.
In the RoI motor caravans ARE NOT included as a vehicle category in the legislation underpinning the speed limits for vehicles over 3.5t.
The lacuna in the relevant legislation means that motor caravans of any GVW are subject to the same speed limits as cars.
It's wrong, but it's just another example of how motor caravans are assumed to be commercial vehicles by the RSA and not a specific private passenger vehicle in their own right.
