Leak at TV aerial - what's the best solution?

We have a leak at the TV aerial on our newly bought camper. We want to remove the aerial and cap the hole. Is there a strightforward method for this?

This is a pic of the interior. There's water coming down the screw thread, and also water above the flange and below the ceiling.

Here are two pictures of the exterior:

We'd appreciete the benefit of your experience :D

You can buy the cap that fits over the hole if you remove the aerial, get yourself some Motorhome Sikaflex and put plenty on underneath the cap.

If you wish to keep the aerial, just take it all out and reseal it all back on again, that checker plate would worry me below the aerial and you MIGHT find it is getting under the checker plate and coming through the aerial hole and not through the aerial at all.

That looks like ordinary silicon around the base.
Looks to me like someone has attempted to fix the leak before.

The caps only fill the hole the ariel ccaoms out of so if you leak is under the base it will not help.

As Ally says, buy sikaflex, remove the whole base and clean all the silicon off it. Put it back on with a real good layer of sikaflex to bed the base into. Make sure it is thick enough to allow for the ridges on the tread plate.

That would allow you to keep the ariel.

We are based in the West of Ireland. Where do we get the sikaflex and cap? Thanks for replies. Very helpful

You should be able to get sikaflex at any good hardware store---check the use by date

Hi MM1,

Not wishing to confuse the issue. :D On a couple of occassions I have found small amounts of water dripping down the ariel mast.

In my case I am pretty sure it has not been the mastic seal at fault. I suspect it has been able to just run down the mast from outside.

Tightening the plastic friction retaining nut stops it. But your situation may be different.

Must investigate it more thoroughly this season.

Did we ever get that damp meter Ally ?

Around that joining of the two checkered plates is a bad place and I would remove the plate and work the sikaflex around the hole for the ariel.Put the plates back and put the sikaflex where you see the domestic mastic in the picture. All around the edges of the plate should be done as well ,just to be sure.Hope this helps .

Mr Cool is correct, But if the checkered plate is Bonded on to the roof skin, I would not attempt to remove it as the checkered plate is thicker than the roofskin and you might damage or even tear the roofskin. if you can prise the roofskin slightly apart from the checkered plate around the circcumference of the hole, dry it and put sealer in, it should do the trick.

I had that problem with in mine and it turns out the leak was coming from water getting into the actual ariel itself. I think I have some pictures of the repair job that I did. I'm also in the West so if you are near me I'd be happy to come take a look and advise.

Here you go.

The problem manifest itself as persistent drips coming down the inside of the ariel shaft.

Like you I initially assumed that the problem was with the roof mount. But as there was no signs of dampness on the ceiling I began to doubt that. So I decided to open the up the unit itself to have a look. Initially you could be forgiven for thinking that it is a sealed unit but it isn't.

And voila:
Here was the problem.

Resealed it with silaflex and not a bother since.

Hope that helps.

Garage, many thanks for that comprehensive reply. Unfortunately in our case the area surrounding the aerial on ceiling is damp. We have removed the areial and sealed it up totally including all around the checkerplates. It is still damp but not dripping but the weather is dry now. Does it take a while for residual water to dry out? Should I try to dry it out with a hair dryer??????
