Sitting here in the van in Sligo. I had pulled in to check the map and when I tried to move again it wouldnt go into second. Tried lots of things but nothing. I've contacted the breakdown (DAS, through Caravanwise) so someone on their way 1.5/2 hours. Contacted the go to guy JJF and he thinks it could be a selector fork. For Forks sake it's a long way home on the scooter 😎🤓

You need to be in the know Ally 8-)

Apparently I was insured through DAS and they organised everything. I was speaking with someone from France about it.

Next problem, my mechanic thinks I need a gearbox. I've tried a few guys who say they can't get the parts to recondition and I've tried a few places for second hand, no joy. Anyone know anyone

What are the details of what you require part numbers year etc. I'm going by someone tomorrow who might have something.

There is one type of gearbox that is a difficult one to get.
I have a gearbox that a guy put Baulk rings and hub in it but it was too late, bearings were too far gone and caused shaft damage.

The Baulk rings and hub will be OK if that’s what is wrong with yours…… it’s here and free if it’s of any good,

I got the guy a replacement gearbox from a contact in the Netherlands, if I knew the model I will make the call for you.

The difficult one to get is the one with the level bung in the differential housing on the drivers side (long driveshaft side)……

Thanks Martin. My guy hasn't looked at it yet but he thinks its looking like I need a gearbox. Details are Ducato 2003, 2.8JTD
128 hp 244 model and I think its the higher geared version. I've tried around and people are telling me they can't get the parts to recondition.

Jeez Tommy,

Id be worried about a lad that is telling you the box is knackered before checking it out.......

I'd be getting it over to jjf to check it proper and give you the honest findings

If it was ok before you pulled in and not crunching gears or hard to get into gear it sounds like it might be ok,

A complete box normally dosent just stop, usually a bearing whining or crunch etc would give you an indication before hand,

Fingerd crossed its just the selector and you can still make your bilbao trip 🤞🏻

The guy I spoke to would relay need to know what gearbox is in it, is it hydraulic or cable clutch, the van year doesn't mean that is the year of the box. he did say he had a couple of spare gearbox's but knowing him that could mean they are for spares, because he wouldn't know what they were relay like.

Mike Chubb at No1 Gear was an expert on the older Ducatos but I believe he has retired due to I’ll health.
If you establish what parts you need I’d suggest giving him a ring as he is still giving out sound advice to all in sundry.
No doubt he would still have parts lying about as I got a clutch fork for one of our members a couple of years back.

The gearbox Tommy needs is the 20UM05 box.
The code is stamped on the crown wheel housing on the box.

We’ve located one in the Netherlands but a local one would be easier.
I can get a 72hr delivery via DHL to Ireland.

Ally I still have the old gearbox but think second gear is deceased. Just stopped South of Dublin for a bite to eat heading for the boat. So far so good. The van is 20 this month so I expect a few things to be wearing out

For F sake, it's at it again. Pulled in for a short stop and I've no 2nd gear and no reverse. I had intended to spend a few more days around Verdun but have decided to head for the boat. Just wondering if it could be the cables to the gear lever. Don't fancy spending another couple of grand

The linkage give proplems on older vans, from water getting on it, it is generally recommended to service the linkage before touching the gearbox,it's about an hour's labour.
Have a look at this I found.

Worth investigating the linkages. You've already replaced the gearbox. I recently couldn't engage reverse and struggled with 1st. I gave the linkages a good spray with White Lithium and eventually changing gear got smoother. A few hundred miles later, the same thing, so I repeated spraying, and again it was smooth. White Lithium is probably not the ideal but it is all I had.
