I was leaving Strandcamping this morning and drove over to dump water when I finished the van wouldnt start, turned a couple of times then nothing. Jamie got me started with a jump from a booster pack (thanks Jamie). I drove home only stopping to fill with diesel with the engine running as I was scared to switch it off. When I got home I switched off and it wouldn't start again. I suspect a dud battery or bad earth. To add insult to injury we stopped at a toll on the M7 and couldnt find 1st, second or 4th gear. This continued until the toll on the M1 North, where they all came back, any ideas. Think its time to buy that Concorde

Check the battery pole connections Tommy,
Then where the + and - join the starter,
Use the meter to see what the battery is reading amd read voltage whilst trying to start it,

The loss of gears is more than likely the mechanism on top of the gear box lacking grease / oil / some kinda lube,
my own was torture to get reverse 1st & 5th, i gave all a good smather with oil (10w40 engine oil) and worked it in,

You tube the gears as its a common problem where the scuttle lets water directly on to the mechanism,

My 2.8 gave similar intermittent issues recently with my starting. I’m the end it was a loose/broken earth wire. Had that replaced and fine since. Got my gearbox oil changed recently too and used the tip posted on the forum and overfilled it slightly to help lubricate 5th gear. Got through MOT first time last week. First time she has done that in years, possibly ever so there is hope for our older fickle Motorhomes!

Tommy I would think you have been given where to start.
When Jami, Jumped it, he would have connected onto the outside of the battery connection or directly to the leads. so clean battery poles and clamps first ,then battery earth to chassis and engine earth to chassis, both ends. I wouldn't think it's the starter connections, but do them as a precaution. obviously test the battery.
The Gears, check the oil level and lube the joints on the shift leavers and connections. it's a good idea on some vans that have any sign of water ingress under the bonnet or around the engine compartment,to lube every move object, and smother then in grease to keep the water away and stop them corroding.

Got a new battery today, the guy tested the old one and said it was knackered so heres hoping that's all it was. I got one of those jump starters and used it to start the van. It's amazing that something so small can start it. Its only twice the size of my mobile but says it can start 5lt diesel engines. Turned mine over easily

If you got the same make as mine it’s recommended to charge it via a cigarette point first time if I recall. They hold their charge for months. I charge mine up via my laptop and a usb every few months.

It can also be used as a power bank to charge other electric devices.

Great bit of kit.

I hope the new battery will last as long as your last one.

The battery pack is the same size as my phone but twice the thickness. Still amazed how it started the van.

Mine arrived today Tommy, lovely looking bit of kit and lightweight.
I hope I never have to use it in anger unless of course on someone else’s vehicle which can only but improve my high standing in the community 😂

It was the compact size impressed me. I used it to start the van twice in a short space if time and it turned the engine over easily

But what’s confusing it can apparently start a vehicle 20 times but only charge a mobile phone 6 times, albeit in 20 minutes

Ive had a jumping Jack for years (same idea) - it can start a 3ltr diesel and its the same, starts more vehicles than phones it charges, I assume its how it outputs the power.

I had seen one of these in the past starting an old international tractor which hadn’t been started for years, you could barely see the tractor for nettles and other weeds growing up around me. I was amazed but held back on buying one as I hadn’t looked at the make, so your recommendation kick started my purchase 👍
