Re: 1st trip to Spain, looking for tips please

We moved from Spain into France today…. Took us 5 hrs.
We paid €1.49 for diesel before we left Spain, of course cheaper next town but I think in France more like price at home., unless it has come down since we went away.

We had been coming up A7 on east coast as far as French border no toll but could see French A9 was definitely toll and came off onto D900 and other route numbers till Beziers. Then that motorway free till Viaduct, yes €15.10. Sat nav set for non tolls wanted us to come off before viaduct but weather had gone from sunny 30deg to 16 deg , it was dark and raining. Now we are just off motorway east of Rodez for a night or two, then we will go NW.
Every time, at least once on each journey we have overshot an exit or come off too soon particularly when instructions come so close and satnav recalculates but sometimes slowly.

I saw BBC weather tonight and Ireland in a scorcher and S.France and N Spain bad weather.
Our Spanish weather was perfect , comfortable 24-28 deg with a nice breeze, cooler in the evening.

So that’s the end for our “1st trip to Spain”….in a motorhome (3 weeks)
Now 2 weeks in France…

Enjoying the updates Rosemary.
When you’re more north (up via Brive-la-Gaillarde and just to the west of Limoges) is the preserved site of Oradour-sur-Glane …… well worth a visit for the historical content and context from WW2, sobering and quite a difficult site to see but worth a visit if you’ve never been. Very good aire beside the site too.
France will be lovely at this time of year, enjoy this part of your journey and we are looking forward to further updates.

I'd second a visit to Oradour-sur-Glane, a very sombre and thought provoking site. If you do go make sure you visit the monument in the graveyard, there's another half underground building in front of it with a lot of exhibits. A pocket torch might be handy as some of the exabits weren't very well lit when I was there.

Ouradour-sur-glane is a very moving place and anyone travelling through that area should take the experience in.
We have been there on two occasions and still find it difficult to comprehend the suffering inflicted on the residents of that time .

I had been writing on the topic “1st trip to Spain….tips”, but continuing with our journey into France thought I would give it a new title. (Would admin like to transfer one or two posts where discussion was on French places to visit?
“Search” probably has a lot of information on France.
We were regular visitors to France but 2020 Covid stopped us from going and though some did go last year a lot more people will go abroad again this year….particularly MH owners who have only been around Ireland….it’s a whole new experience.

Many of us use ACSI CC which is a discount in low season,(now very few campsites in Ireland in their book) Jamie you once explained reason.
ACSI change their ref numbers on campsites every year so if quoting campsites by number, it will only be relevant in the current year).
ACSI added an extra this year to the CC for a fee, (about €5,99(?) it gave Aires too.
Many use Aires but I find they can look very close together.
This was my first year using Park4Night , the reviews are as recent as a few days old .
The translate button on reviews is great, I wish they did it on ACSI. I compared apps,..I don’t read fiction…my go-to-read when away is where are we going next!,
Others like CamperContact App
Also Ally is looking for reviews on overseas as motorhomeparkinglocations app is beyond Ireland now.

Years ago I was quoted over €1000 by Acsi to be in their Acsi card discount scheme. For me it made no sense to pay over €1000 in order to give a discount on my pitch fees.

Before the popularity of camping apps people used paper guides to find campsites including the acsi guide and many people visiting foreign countries would primarily choose their overnight stops based on the paper guide. This gave the paper guides some value.

The same still holds true to an extent with all the Aires books. There are still some that only use the all the Aires guides to select overnight stopovers.

But paper guides are out of date from the date of publication whereas apps are always updating, (well the good ones are) so paper guides have been many replaced with apps.

Finally there isn’t the competition in Ireland like there is in mainland Europe and if people want to stay in a location in Ireland at best they will have the choice of a campsite and an Aire whereas in France, Germany, Spain etc there’s much more choice hence the need to offer acsi discount among other discounts schemes and longer stay incentives.

The ACSI app is excellent. I never look at the physical guides.

Interesting I find the app difficult to navigate compared to ALL OTHER camper apps.
But it’s still better than the book when trying to find a site in a given location.

I use the acsi app first for certain info can see several photos and reviews and press route planner.
I then have the number and can look at book to check inside cover on what is available... eg pools as some open all season and others not till late June and high season. Also look at the numbers in the map booklet.
Never sure what to expect with wifi, can be free all over campsite, maybe only from reception and maybe sometimes expensive daily charge and weak signal. Most people have 3 or 4g on phone, and I have linked in with hotspot on Nigel's phone (hoping it comes under his monthly rate!) .

Thinking of going to a site in St. Hilaire-de-Riez called Flower Camping Les Biches. Can't find any reviews on ACSI or Camper Contact. Just wondering if anyone had been there and what the thought of it .

Buy wine

That's on the way home, Tommy. 😊
Drive down the ramp, and don't try to cover too much, it's a big country, and unless you are very bold, they will let you come back many times.
Call in to the WBS wine store, say heigh to Chris and Eva, tell them you were sent from MHC and get a selection to try while on your travels, then place an order on line, they will have it ready for you, for collection, on the day you come home.

Great info Rosemary. Really enjoy your posts and others comments & info.

I'm just back from a 2 week stint in USA & heading to England in camper for 3 weeks. First time doing England (Rosslare to Pembroke). Not sure how my 'Go-Mo' phone provider will behave in terms of roaming fees etc

@sprinter

La Cale, known locally as "The Shack" ! - see https://maps.app.goo.gl/u2F9dhw3G9WTSRcN7?g_st=ic
About as rustic and basic of a place you’ll ever get, but locals flock to it.
Be there no later than 18:00-18:30 or you won’t get a seat.
Fresh oysters to die for.
Great seafood cooked simply and served without the glitz. Love the place.
Next door have white tablecloths and crystal glasses with waiters in tails, it doesn’t get 1/4 the crowd nor does it have the cool hippy vibe La Cale has.
We call every year on our return back if we travel via Cherbourg, a must for us.
Motorhomes still stop overnight although last time we were there signs had appeared prohibiting parking overnight, but they still do it !

Yes, parking in the car park, it’s a big area but as always it was being abused by long stayers, hence the appearance of signage.
We stayed the last time when we were there.
If you’re going to call then try their ciders, really great combination with seafood… dry and crisp.
The place is VERY rustic, but that’s its charm in a way. Make sure & stay for the music afterwards, big fella called ‘Poddy’ from Co.Offaly plays the violin there, he’s good craic but being a hippy he’s usually ‘a little stoned’… 😂

A bit of help required, a buddy of ours is looking for a wheelchair friendly campsite, not in a motorhome, where you can rent accomadtion, near the seaside or other places of interest.
Normandy /Brittany, no more than 4hours from either of the ports, Cherbourg /Roscoff
Strange enough I have looked at the ACSI book but unless I'm mistaking there doesn't seem to be a cataguary for this in the 6 listings inside the front cover.

Anyone know about the other guides.?

>>Sprinter@ A bit of help required, a buddy of ours is looking for a wheelchair friendly campsite, not in a motorhome, where you can rent accommodation, near the seaside or other places of interest. <<

Home from our almost 6 weeks in France (and Spain) , we stayed in 12 campsites but our last campsite was L’Esperance ACSI 990. It was an hour from Cherbourg on the west coast 400m from beach.
I don’t use a wheelchair but I have a walker so I am very aware of facilities for disabled.
I know you are asking about bungalows, yes they have them , whether any suitable for disabled I don’t know but if you check the information on that ACSI number email them.
I thought it had the best inside heated pool it had easy steps and a handrail (rare), it was the first pool I didn’t need help getting into myself. It also had a mobile pool chair with big round wheels.
My only activity when away was visiting the pool.
Definitely all campsites had disabled facilities in toilet block ( scroll down ACSI amenities list on the app for disabled..not sure if listed on inside cover of book). ( but some campsites a key given to disabled client) …though not necessary if renting a bungalow.
I only saw photos of local places, once we park, Nigel cycles or hikes to nearest towns.

I never finished our French part of route…..
We tend to do 4-5 hour drives and stay a few days.
Also the ACSI ref numbers change every year.

End if May we were at Camping Le Paradis in St.Leon sur Vezere , we always go there, (first went there 37 years ago when sons were young). Big pitches. Nigel did a canoe trip (€28) down winding River Vezere from campsite to Les Eyzies, at 10.30, mini bus brings you back at 4 pm but he got there at 2pm . By road 15 min drive.
Went to campsite restaurant , also has takeaway and shop.

Next stop
Cognac Le Foret to Camping L’ ALouttes, (ACSI 1613) near Limoges, but first visited Ordaur sur Glane, which was 20 mins north of campsite, very hot day and too much for me, I sat in cool under trees Nigel took loads of photos , but had to retrace his steps back though village as no exit at end which was closest to car park with our MH, but he bought me two books on it.
Campsite has very big pitches, (man made beach on a lake within a few kms. Campsite had a lovely new toilet block compared to rustic one on last visit.
Also day we were there they moved into a new reception/ bar/ restaurant building. They serve meals in evening, we were there on a pizza night. They have a book exchange but not many English books.
Nigel reads at least one book every day but only has time when away in MH.

Moved to Vendee - to Talmont St Hilaire to La Littoral, not on ACSI book now but €25 a night ( most camosites they add on a small tourist tax). We have always stopped here in Vendee , great pools, great for kids,
Sprinter@ …they also do bungalows, popular with Irish families but is that too far south for your friend?

Next stop was in Pontorson, camping Haliotis (ACSI 989) where we had arranged to meet friends, great having a bit of craic again😀. (Rarely saw Irish families, mainly Dutch and German and UK) they had glamping tents, not sure if they had bungalows but you still have to use the campsite toilets. Great Carrefore supermarket around corner if bringing home presents .
Nigel cycled to Mont St Michel, 9km to Causeway (walk or bus rest if way) Nigel only went for the cycle along the path from campsite … closer to Mont is a big Aire or campsite Aux Pommiers in Beauvoir where we stayed previous times.
Our last campsite was L’Esperance as mentioned above.

Sat Nav is great but it can be frustrating you can end up on back roads that don’t appear on Atlas and place names not even on map 🤬😫. ACSI do say if not to follow satnav to their campsites as you could end up in a tight village.

We got Irish Ferries home WB Yeats, got there at 2pm for 4.30 sailing and it was hot, with lots of MHs and cars with kids, feel sorry for them if they need a toilet as you are never sure when you will move to next stage. We request to be near lift. But the main move onto ship wasn’t till 4.25 and surprised when Captain said ready to go 4.45. Lovely smooth crossing. We were very fortunate with sailing to Bilbao and coming home by Cherbourg.

It was our first trip overseas since Summer 2019, you forget how good the facilities and rates are compared to Ireland. Spain was definitely cheaper, particularly fuel , France closer to Irish prices.

Thank you Rosemary for all the updates and musings regarding the trip, always an enjoyable experience reading about others journeys and experiences, and something we can make notes on for our own future trips.
Have to agree on the facilities on the continent and looking forward to going back once more.

Can anyone in France at the minute let me know what diesel prices are at the moment. Arrive full or arrive empty?

€1.58.9.yesterday in Go Fuel's on Ashford 2 min off the M11. ( €1.58.9 diesel and €1.68.9 Petrol )
I would assume the same price in Kylemore Rd D10.
