Trend in used MH prices

 ·
Posted: 15.04.2023  ·  #1
Hi all,

It's a few years later than we had originally hoped, but we are confident that we will be able to buy a used MH this time next year, should present circumstances continue.

I have been looking at ads again for the first time in about a year and I have the impression that used MH prices might have crept down a little, or they have at least peaked.

Yes, they are still outrageously expensive. Our budget will be around the 20k mark so our family-friendly MH will likely be at least twenty years old. An ideal buy would be something like a rear lounge Euro Mobil (there's a couple of those up today). I'd prefer a LHD to keep it out of the ditches on narrower roads and they have better winterisation than many other brands. It will get year-round use, even for day trips to the beach which we do year-round.

Anyway, is my impression of the current market correct, or am I way off? It's doesnt make a material difference to our situation really, the prices will be what they will be when we buy. I'm just wondering if others are seeing what I think I'm seeing, so really I'm just here to spoof away and shoot the breeze.

Many thanks in advance for any shared thoughts,

Ken B.

As Ally has said they may be falling but have quite a bit to go yet.
Whatever you decide to go with make sure and have a good habitation examination done as that can be frightful .
There are good motorhomes out there in your price range so do not rush into the first one you see.
Good luck 👍👍👍

Yeah, that's my impression too. I haven't been taking notes or anything, but it seems like our 20k budget is pulling slightly younger vans than this time last year. Campervans, though, are still apparently making crazy money.

Thanks for the heads-up. Given the age of the van we will be buying, we won't actually be too concerned about brand names (despite what I said above). At that age, the overall condition of the van will matter far more than the logo on the side.

I am reasonably confident that I'll have the wits to at least triage the shortlist a bit, but I'll be bringing an expert with me for any viewing and test drive :)

If it a motorhome see if you can aquire one or bring along a damp meter to check the rear wall around skylights & windows.

Some say avoid ladders and bike racks because they can weaken the back panel and allow damp/water ingress.

Thanks for that, I know you can't be too careful with damp.

I'm not sure if a seller will be too happy with me jabbing probes into their walls though, but I'll be using my nose and eyes at the very least. I had an offer of help from a long-time motorhomer and mechanic recently so I'll be taking him up on that. I was also passed a number of someone who services motorhomes in our area and I'd be willing to pay him to look at a van for me.

A damp meter used for the habitation service and damp inspection on a Motorhome does not have probes .
If any seller refused to allow for a proper damp inspection then walk away .

A professional damp meter for Motorhomes doesn't have probes.

Have a look at this.... forum/topic.php?t=15635

I dont like bike racks at all, people can overload them, especially now with the weight of electric bikes. Stresses the back wall and causes damp issues.

I took a damp meter when I was viewing vans inc ones from dealers/brokers and very glad I did. As long as the damp meter is not invasive then they should have nothing to hide.

yes ken, creeping down slowly, as with property and cars soon id say...so hang in there. I too am still in the 'family friendly' category. Ive had several factory built campervans over the years and have a lot of experinece travelling on all modes of leisure vehicle....so when I was last in market in 2019, I built a conversion instead. I now have a vw crafter with 5 berths in which everyting is brand new and of high spec and it was built for a fair bit less than £20....would that be something you would consider?...the benefit also is that the base vehicle will be newer than you would buy and maintenance is more straigtforward too as more garages will entertain the work. Also less chance of dreaded damp in a van conversion as there is no structural wook to absorb it and you would be in control of any opening that you make and seal...

Fair points and I take them all. I have looked into this since and I have seen the Protimeter brand recommended by professionals. They are very expensive, but when compared to the price of having a section of the habitation area gutted and rebuilt they are a bargain.

I think it might be wise to pick one up and not just for inspecting a potential purchase. It could pay for itself to keep an eye on your own van after you buy it for the duration of its service. Whatever we buy, it will be old.

Very true about e-bikes. This will help narrow down the search, or at least I'll prioritise those without racks.

I get the low-maintenance appeal of a van conversion but we are set on buying a larger coachbuilt unit for our family. We will need the internal space as we often do day trips in the winter and also, given my wife's health issues, having a decent-sized bed to lie down on at short notice will be invaluable. Time spent around the table is also a feature of our family life, and so a bit of elbow room will be appreciated.

We're not really into package holidays and the like. I can't really relax in a hotel. We love renting a static unit in Kerry and just letting the kids cut loose outside. Fresh air and a time spent closer to the elements (winter or summer, rain or shine) is our thing. The likes of Dick's Field is my idea of heaven (we are only about 30 mins from Ardmore and are on that beach regularly anyway).

Pitch up in a motorhome, hook up and switch off. That's the dream, that's what we want to do.

The biggest MAN van would give you most if not all of those. And between 7 & 10 thousand cheaper than a Sprinter or Renault.

"I now have a vw crafter with 5 berths"

What way have you got it configured, I presume you also have a shower/ toilet combo.?
I was considering rearranging my E- LWB Sprinter, but was having to loose space to fit a reasonable shower.?

I'm still tracking prices, and I noticed that price cuts appear to be occurring.

Now, you can't over-interpret this. It could be that there is a routine pattern of people asking for too much and then having to cut their asking price. That could be normal on Done Deal.

But it's also possible that vans were getting asking prices until relatively recently and now that has come to an end. I'm almost certain that they are quite a bit cheaper than last year, certainly at my end of the market.

I added explanatory titles and sub-heads to explain what I'm doing in the spreadsheet. I'm not an Excel expert, by any means! The prices up top are the original followed by the reduced price and the date I observed the reduction. I noticed that people delete the listing and repost it to give it a bump, so there was no point in adding links to the spreadsheet.

I don't add every van. There are some that look fishy right away or I have zero interest in, and so I don't bother adding those.

You are the opposite of most who do little research and buy on exterior looks and hardly consider the layout.

Well done for putting a bit of time and effort into your purchase it should pay off when you are in a position to buy.
