I'm missing the open road more than I thought I would since selling what was 'our' Rimor.
I've been casually Googling various websites, looking at the possibility of maybe a smallish day van or van conversion, for short trips initially, then maybe longer journeys eventually.
Some of the best vehicles seem to be up North, which obviously would entail all the import hassle and VRT etc.
Is there a general 'rule of thumb' percentage that can be added to a listed sterling price to calculate an approximate total euro price on import completion?
Any advice appreciated, many thanks!

There is a sort of rule of thumb, but it's a very thick thumb.
The VRT charged is 13.5% of what the person assessing the vehicle thinks its Market Selling Price might be. There is no official listing of actual selling prices from which the OMSP can be foretold.
A friend who imported a motorhome last year was charged a sum that was reduced by €1,900 on appeal.

Tony
Cannot help on the VRT front but I’ve previously been in you position and had doubts about returning to van life after the death of my wife a number of years ago. I eventually took the decision to start again with an older vehicle to see how it would work out . It is certainly a different experience and can be more challenging at times (especially eating alone in the evening) and will put you outside your comfort zone on occasions. However if you love travelling and seeing new locations this will outweigh the negatives. Whilst the world largely revolves around couples I have always encountered warm and friendly people and enjoyed many new adventures along the way.
Don’t rush into any quick decisions but I’m certain that this would enhance the next phase of your life.
Best wishes
Ken

How about joining a club? It would be a great source of new like-minded friends and being alone would not be an issue.
I've very often encountered people traveling alone, for various reasons, both at club rallies and further afield around Europe and I have never seen them being left out of any socialising.

Hi Tony, I would advised when asked about importing, from Europe, to add 20% onto the asking price from the dealer, to cover the VRT. plus about €1500 for the ferry, flights,B&B etc for collection, then you can add another €500 if you want to go have a look at what your buying, with a unit registered in NI add the Sterling cost. if after all this there is still value against the Irish price of something similar, go for it. ( there is most of the time )

I would look for a small motorhome, instead of a camper van, because the prices of factory converted vans have gone completely off the wall. which is what the VRT is based against.

Once imported the paperwork is relatively easy, so long as you follow all the procedure, no matter how stupid it appears.it is easier in the long run, to nod your head, and bite your tongue.

Good luck with whatever you do, you have a new chapter in life, even if it's one, you would never have wanted, suffice to say we are all here if you need anything.
