When changing my battery I seem to have damaged the inertia/fuel cut off switch so the van will not start as presumably the switch has done its job and cut the fuel off to prevent the van starting. Does anyone know if I can buy a generic cut off switch to replace it or does it have to be the origina?. Mine is identical to the one in the link below but new replacements do not seem to be available.

I see others online for other makes of vehicle with the same “PBT GF” wording but they all look a little different to mine and presumably it will not slot into whatever it needs to under the bonnet. I’m not mechanically minded as you may well have guessed! Thanks in advance

First off are you sure your switch is not working, have you tried to reset it, some of them have a reset button on the top ,put power to it and press the reset button, disconnecting the battery may have tripped the switch into the off position,

Thanks I tried resetting by pushing the button on top but it still doesn’t seem to work. I did get it to start once by fiddling with the cut of switch so it may not be totally gone. I’d rather replace it with a new one if possible to improve reliability as it has given trouble before.

Gavin. The inertia switch is a simple on/off circuit breaker.
To test all you need to do is to bridge the wires going into it, you’re van should start.
Any inertia switch will do it, any breakers yard.

Thanks folks. I tried bridging the wires but for some reason it still wouldn’t start. Good to know any old switch will do. I tested the switch with a small battery and multimeter and the current flows through it ok. I must be missing something else.

I know it may be a stupid question but did you press the rubber cover in & hear a click to reset it. Or have you tried everything like that & nothing works? If nothing works then I would go to a good motor factors or fiat dealer with the chassis number (Brian Reynolds Fiat) Dunore, Drogheda. +353 41 983 2877.. Hope this helps you.

Thanks Ron, I did push it to reset it. I gave John (JJF) a call earlier and he gave Mei a few pointers. I have removed the inertia switch and twisted the wires going to it together to get the van started and moved back under cover but no joy yet. Turns over ok but fuel is cut off somehow. Could be a relay or something too.
