Hey all!

I'm in the process of relocating to Ireland with my family. We spent last 10 years in Middle East and I've been so deprived of roaming outdoors that I got a strong itch of getting a motorhome to explore my new home. Probably not the best place, but I am hoping to be talked out of it. :-D

Anyway; never owned a motorhome but I did rent it, in fact 12 years ago we rented a motorhome in Ireland for 10 days and enjoyed it greatly. I only managed to smash one side mirror, so I count it as a big success. I have way more experience with sailboats but I notice both share similar set of challenges so I think I'll fit right in.

I am here first and foremost to learn and do a lot fo reading before asking questions. General idea is to find a 3-5 berth motorhome in the sub-20k range that is mechanically sound but needs a bit of work to make it presentable. I'm expecting to use it for shorter trips on weekends with longer getaways couple of times a year, time permitting. Ireland & UK only. Bit worried about the cost of ownership in Ireland after getting the taste of car insurance.

Now your turn and don't go gentle on me, I suspect I might need a reality check but maybe I'm wrong. :)

Welcome to the community, car insurance is a complete government permitted RIP off, but once you've been screwed over the car, 😈motorhome Insurance and tax, is at a special rate, and will cost you max €410. open drive 25 to70 years. Tax €110.
The Motorhome's themselves are a tad expensive at the moment,
Best of luck with your move.

Welcome to the Craic. If you have your motorhome in your possession for six months or a year, I'm not sure which, you wont have to pay duty on it when you relocate to Ireland. Depending on where you are at the moment this might be an option. Lots on here head to Europe rather than GB, better weather, cheaper grub, wine and not that much difference in ferry prices. Left hand drive here no problem.

It's six months, but you can't just buy it and store it, you have to be seen to have used it also. A new car would be a good idea as well,if you have the time.

Thanks everyone for the welcome and a few comforting words regarding tax & insurance. :)

I am already in Ireland, so I'll be buying one here once a good opportunity presents itself.
