1st trip to Spain, looking for tips please

We're heading to Spain Mar 29th via Bilbao in our small poptop camper for about 4 weeks (haven't booked the return leg yet).
This will be our 1st time in Spain and looking for any tips on where to stay, whether to book ahead etc.
We are looking to stay in different places, mainly camp sites, for 4 to 6 nights at a time. We have bookings made for the 1st four nights in Murcia region and hope to make our way south from there depending on the weather etc.
We have the acsi card but would appreciate any comments especially because we will be there over Easter and wonder whether it gets very busy during this time.

From Bilbao to Murcia is a long, long drive…. So 1st night there will be a stretch.

1st night stop could be Teruel, about half way. Good stop outside the Guard Civil barracks, good supermarket right beside it, lovely bakery on site. The town is nice too. See https://app.motorhomeparkinglocations.com/#/location/6611

Costal areas will be busy, get the usual apps and adopt a pretty relaxed attitude….. won’t be mad busy if you’re a bit inland in late March.

Bilbao - Murcia is a long way, over eight hours of driving.
At about the halfway point, there is an Aire just south of Madrid where we have stayed a number of times, it's also very good for a day visit into the city of Madrid by local commuter train. It's next to an E.Leclerc supermarket and service station where you will get the cheapest fuel in Spain. Here's a link to it https://www.ayto-pinto.es/area-de-servicio-de-autocaravanas

Thanks JJF & baguette, yes it is a long drive and are planning to do it in 2 stages. We're not sure on our route yet so thanks for the Aire tips.

We will be very much guided by the weather and yes a relaxed attitude will be the order of the day :)

I didn’t ask as I wasn’t bothered but I did not see any MHs plugged in, so I doubt it.

[/quote]

Most people want a hook up on the ship to have electrical power to their fridge as gas should be switched off for safety reasons.
While the Salamanca is a relatively new ship and one would presume the quality of the 230V supply would be excellent, modern motorhomes carry a lot of electronics sensitive to over / under voltages. Damaged circuit boards are expensive to replace, not to mind the potential additional inconvenience of failure at the start of a holiday.

I wouldn't take a hook up on a ship unless my motorhome had dedicated under/over voltage suppression installed to protect the on-board electronic components.

We have travelled several times using 2 litre frozen bottles of water to keep fridge cooled and everything in the freezer section pre-frozen in the home freezer before loading and never had any issues.

We were on the Salamanca a few wks ago, didn't see any vans hooked up either...nobody mentioned to switch off the gas but we did anyway just to be safe...we always fill the fridge with frozen bottles of water also to keep the milk and food cool and you can drink it then when thawed,we never fill the freezer ourselves though, just stop at a supermarket when in Spain or France.

We are hoping to head to Spain for a month in September via the Bilbao route and tour the North West cost, maybe popping into Northern Portugal. Its over 25 years since we were last in Spain with a MH and I'm sure things have changed.I'm happy about campsites etc but is there anything we need to look out for, regulations etc. Any tips?

No particular problem if not:
1. Rear twin-wheel axles vehicles on autopistas pay like trucks.
2. The obligation of a double warning triangle in the event of a stop on the carriageway is about to be replaced by a flashing light to be placed on the roof.
I don't remember when the obligation will go into effect but it will be between sometime in the future. Check it out.

Thanks, I've been getting away with telling the operators on the French motorways that I've a motorhome and been charged Class 2 or 3. Are the Spanish tolls automated

Don't think so. Only units I saw plugged in were refrigerated trailers.

Heading off on Brittany Ferries late Friday night, arrive Bilbao Sunday 8am.
Are supermarkets open on Sunday? , , we have never been to Spain in MH, we will stay north coast, head west to just past Santander first few nights, (though UK ferries come into Santander so might be popular campsite, I sent them an email tonight.
We may go as far as Porto, but I think. I would like to go NE around Girona. L'Estartit, Roses. We have been to Barcelona on fly /drive short breaks years ago but now my mobility is not good, so prefer to be on a campsite and Nigel can head out on his bike and go for walks on his own.
It's a change of scenery and like we have not been overseas in MH since May 2019.

We will then travel up through France home about mid June via Irish Ferries.

I have studied 2023 ACSI cc Book, have it on app too and niw their extra fir €5.99 shows the Aires too. I have also looked ar Parking4Night and the new Motorhome locations parking .
I was nearly a week offline from forum but everything fine now.

Supermarkets in Spain are generally closed on Sunday. By careful of going to a mercadona near Santander as it had a heaight restriction of less than 3m on the way out, no indication on the way in. I had to go against the one way traffic with the help of a store employee to get out.
Santander is only about an hour drive from Bilbao.
Have a great time.

Those who have travelled recently on Salamanca , are the cabin sockets 3 Pin like at home but we have bought an adaptor. We bring an extension cable as I plug in a CPAP machine.
From post above also bought a 2nd triangle…I had said we could one from our cars.

We have a 4 berth cabin with window. I think on Irish Ferries we had kettle and tea/coffee. We took a flask in past, but it would be one less thing to take up from MH.

I am hoping TV in cabin will have UK channels, as I would like to watch the Coronation. When booking I thought it would be something to watch being at sea all day Saturday.

Three pin sockets, no kettle. Tv on demand not sure if it showed British tv.

A long time ago I made up a short (about a foot long) 4 gang extension cable with three pin square sockets and a continental round pin plug. It enables us to power multiple devices at the same time.
Not alone is it useful on ferries but also in continental campsite toilet blocks, hotels and apartments.

Plugs in cabin are European (and one 3 pin UK type I think by the TV)
2x USB charging points are present.
Yes, there is English/UK television as well as films on demand.
Enjoy your trip, looking forward to some posts and pictures.

Yes good amount of sockets.
Floor space in 4berth is quite tight and only 2 of us. Beds comfy.
TV perfect.
Crossing fine, foggy this morning.
Due into Bilbao at 7am Irish time Sunday.
The 90 min wifi, once activated you can't log out and in again later - the 90 mins starts counting down.

We are going for the whole month and doing the 2 night sailing on way over. I was thinking it works out better as you get onto the boat and get straight to bed. Its 1 night on way back. I'm not a great sailor so not as keen on that one. It will be good to get back to Spain after all these years

I agree the 2 nighter on the way over gets in at a good time to get straight on the road and put some miles behind you.

The crossing on Salamanca was smooth particularly last stage. Even though alongside at 5.30 they don’t ask you to move to car deck till 7 (Irish time) so about 8,30 Spanish time when driving off.
So far only 2nd night here in ACSI 2363 (by 2023 book), west of Santander, it is early May and this pool is open but most don’t open till Mid June. It has an amazing 3 course menu including a pint of beer for €15.
Some couples returned here as they were in Spain for heatwave and instead of going to Seville it was recommended they head north again.
Not selected our next campsite I have ** the ones that look the best for us but I don’t do sightseeing and I don’t want tightly packed Aires.

Heads up, some of the Aires will give your more room than some of the campsite pitches, not all, but some sites make the most of every bit of land. Spanish families can and often do fill their own pitch and spare space on neighbouring pitches.
The Spanish have a volume control that goes up to 11 with the lowest setting being 10. Oh and they are awake when you want to sleep.

I love the Spanish but if there’s an empty pitch next to a Spanish family or an empty pitch next to any other nationality I would not choose the one next to the Spanish.

That’s all for now, adios.

It always amazes me that at 7pm in our (Italy) restaurants in the south the only diners are foreigners, preferably Nordics.
Only around nine the locals begin to appear.

When I'm abroad I try to adapt to the local lifestyle.
Have you ever thought that, although Spain is largely west of Greenwich, it uses Central European Time ?
Which means being an hour late (considering the longitude even 1.5).
So it's normal for them to have dinner at 10pm, time to digest, a chat and it's midnight.
It is you who dine (and go to bed) with the chickens. Smile.

As for the occupation of your pitch, I agree.
Just get them dislodged.
But I remember that in one of my travel reports in Scotland I wrote:
Every Brit has at least one dog.
Every Brit takes his dog for a walk.
If the campsite is large, the Brit takes the dog to do his business away from his pitch and close to yours.
If they enforced the removal regulation, British campsites would be empty.

True I’m not knocking their lifestyle or culture but I am saying it’s at odds to mine. Hence I want a bit of separation where possible.

I have no problem with campers making the best use of their pitches, after all, like me, they have paid to enjoy that space for the time they have rented it. My concern is when their enjoyment runs contrary to the campsite rules they have signed up to when paying their site fee. I have been beside many nationalities during trips around France, Spain and Portugal, and although all can be very noisy (and irritating) at times, most observe silence after 11:00 👍. However, my experience on a lot of Spanish sites is that this rule is not always observed or enforced and there is a lot of noise, both children and adults, until the early hours. I understand that holidays are for enjoying and making the most of, but consideration should also given to other campers who share that space with you. Unfortunately for me, even though I observe the site rules, I am forced to move and look for a more suitable location. Perhaps there is no 11:00 silence rule on Spanish campsites. 😎
