Hi all, I have a 2002 Knaus Sun traveller which I have had serviced and timing belt done. The mechanic said there were two patches of rust on either side at the front. From what I can see that seems to be it, as the rest of the chassis and wheel arches etc. seem OK (some real horrors on YT) Can anyone recommend somewhere I could have this fixed. No problem with this at previous CVRT inspections. I have booked it in for the test this Friday and in case this is a fail I would like to have a plan B. Thanks. GeorgeB ps I'm in Dublin 22

You could be lucky with the test. My van had rust on the underside and the CVRT guy passed it but told me I should really get it fixed. So I got it sorted at a local crash repair garage. Should be easy enough to find somewhere to do it in Dublin but if you struggle I can recommend Liam Brennan's in Cork!

Thanks Will this work. It might pass but I'd like to get it done anyway. It's strange what will pass, the rear tyres on mine were the original 2001 I was advised about this two years ago, up to that no problem but it was not a fail. Hopefully I'll get somewhere closer than your suggestion but thanks again.

I wouldn’t be very happy running on tyres over 20 yrs old, they could blow anytime and take a sizeable chunk out of the side of the van if it’s a coach built

Have to agree. I had a rear blow out on a French motorway years ago in a Kon Tiki. There were a few scary moments before I got it stopped

I’d tend to agree with changing them.
I saw first hand what damage a blown tyre can do to bodywork…… and lucky it was only the bodywork damaged, the owner could have been killed.

For the price of them it’s unwise to take a risk, the weight of the vehicle adds additional pressure.

As soon as I was advised about tyres I changed them for Continentals. I didn't know there was a date on tyres and they had plenty of thread. As I said I couldn't believe they passed previous tests and when they did bring it to my attention it was only adviser.

I drove on tyres that were over 45 years old. Mini Cooper tyres, stored in the dark, I bought them and put them on a mini for asthetics, passed MOT no problems.
It's condition not age, but usually they condition with age.

Many years ago a friend with a mh on the Transit twin-wheel chassis got a blowout on the inner wheel. Being a twin wheel he got stopped without any dramatics but the flailing tyre ripped the wheel arch away and with it the bottom of the fridge, which was over the wheels (normal practice). The repair bill came to a nice four-figure sum.
