I tend to book fully flexible ferry tickets, which on Brittany Ferries they say you can alter your sailing upto 4 hours before you sail with no amendment charge. They do say if the crossing is a different price you pay or receive the difference.

Anyway I booked a return with BF out in Jan back in Feb fully flexible but we decided to return early. When we altered our sailing date I was charged€20 amendment fee, when I queried this as I gave them much more than 4 hours notice I was told it’s four hours before any part of your ticket date. As I had already sailed on the outward leg I missed the opportunity to amend for free.

BF then advised me to book two singles next time to be able to amend for free, they also said the two single tickets are the same price as a return.

I know it’s only €20 but you pay extra for the fully flexible so I’ll be booking single tickets in future.

I always book a Flexi ticket Jamie.
But never a return, always a single as I never know the return date.... so amendments did not cost me anything.
Also, the premium lounge on Brittany is worth the extra IMO, especially if its a two night onboard crossing.

I did the premium lounge on Pont Aven Plymouth to Santander and tbh I didn’t rate it. So I didn’t bother Rosslare to Bilbao return, mind you Amanda spent all but 30 mins in the cabin.

I won’t book a return next time.

In fairness it’s in their T and Cs I just didn’t read them. Lesson learned.

I normally book singles, not being tied to a particular company for the return leg gives additional port of departure flexibility.
Travelling off season there's no issue with availability.

Booked one way to Bilbao first w/e May flexi rate same as standard fare till end Feb.
MH just over 3m high (with aerial )and 7m long but bike on rack would be €20 more, so going to put bike inside for crossing. (On the day when boarding would they notice it by ticket??).

The square shield thing that you put on the bike on rack, is there something about must be metal…ours is plastic, and different stripes depending on country, vague memory of past discussion.

Decided not to go with premier lounge with refreshments and food but now the free meal is no longer included in price. Never much choice for gluten free meals.

Any advice on good books and maps.

Going home with Irish ferries, flexi, (not sure what difference was between standard and flexi) as we may want to go home earlier and they have more frequent sailings.

Paying €688 with 4 berth window cabin, flexi on Brittany for 2adults, no dogs.
€379 on Irish Ferries flexi, similar cabin home on 13June
€309 difference, but considering fuel, driving hours

Came across our figure for Irish Ferries return in 2015, €385.50

Plastic warning sign is fine.
Mine is the plastic one, in fact just got a new one as my last one was getting tatty.
Only Italy (I think) insists on a metal one.

Jami, would you do the same thing to one of your customers?

When I sailed with them from Portsmouth in 2019, they did come out of the check-in office and checked my length against markings on the ground. If I'd left the bike on the back I would have been into the next category and they could have got very nasty if they wanted to. If you're putting the bike inside make sure it's well wedged in and tied down, the last thing you want is a handlebar or pedal jumping up and down against a door during a rough crossing.

The square shield thing that you put on the bike on rack, is there something about must be metal…ours is plastic, and different stripes depending on country, vague memory of past discussion.

In some countries the stripes are supposed to point down to the right, in others it's down to the left. I don't think it makes any difference as I've seen them pointing in all directions. I think Italy specifies a metal sign although if it came adrift a plastic one flying down the motorway would be far safer.

Decided not to go with premier lounge with refreshments and food but now the free meal is no longer included in price. Never much choice for gluten free meals.

I use "All the Aires Spain and Portugal" as my bible when travelling, worth it's weight in gold. Michelin zoom maps are great for Northern Spain. There's about six covering from East to West and some fantastic driving all accross the area.

The staff on the call centre are obviously familiar with the question I asked re the extra €20 hence their advice to book single tickets. I do think fully flexible should be just that especially if you pay extra for the the flexible ticket,,, but it isn’t. Now I know.

Re my customers I would hope that my booking process is much more transparent.

Above we have said pick single trips on Brittany Ferries…and the others?
So how often can you make changes, like dates, say few days earlier or later, postponing till later in year, or following year (probably exceptions during Covid restrictions?) or only once?

With BF I was on ticket issue 11 one year. I changed it 11 times. So I think it’s unlimited as long as it is at least four hours before you sail.
