Would anyone the type of place where refills for these 4.5kg Calor Butane cylinders can be typically got ? I see Charles camping do refills but I'm in Clare. Would anyone know if they are common enough ?

Just ran out and trying to unscrew the regulator but it's stuck tight. Don't have proper tools with me but wondering if unlike most things (a left sided bike pedal loosens in a clockwise direction) could it be clockwise to loosen ?

They are a left hand thread, don't know in the west, but the The Harbor Trading Company in Bray co Wicklow do refills. they tell me ,if you phone Calor and ask specifically where in the west do 4.5kg, they should be able to direct you. a marine suppliers might have them.

Got a replacement in Dan McInerney in Ennis. 24 euro refill

Will be interesting to see how long it lasts, expect to be using the gas heater a lot more

Won't last too long with the heating going unfortunately

Have you room to fit a bigger bottle?

I don't. It's designed to fit 2 bottles of that size. And tbh I'm quite happy with that now that I know where I can source refills. Would prefer to always have a full spare rather than have a single larger bottle.

Everything about this camper is designed to optimise space so there is very little opportunity for change. It's my first proper camper (had a LWB Hiace with a fixed bed in the back for 14 years) and its design is pretty much perfect for my needs. Looked at other larger vehicles with microwaves, ovens and large fridges which I wouldn't really use. This has a small 2 way fridge (no gas) and 2 gas hobs with the big trade off being that it fits into most normal car spaces. It does also have a shower/toilet and drop down bed.

I reckon that if the heating is on a lot and I only get as little as 2 weeks out of a cylinder, it's still probably more economical than working from home.

]I'll keep you guys posted but so far I'm seeing that its usually only the morning where heating is needed

Maybe look into getting a diesel heater connected to your van tank , I can't see that size bottle lasting too long in cold weather, hopefully I'm wrong
A few threads on here about diesel heating

Much depends on the outside temperature, on what you want to keep inside and on the insulation of the vehicle and its volume.
But my experience is that a 10Kg cylinder can last from three to four days at the most.

3-4 days or less would certainly change my perspective. Let's wait and see. It's mainly day use for me (working hours) so when even a weak sun is out there is opportunity to use it.

Actually regarding the heater I set a temperature, it reaches what it thinks is the temperature and then stops. It doesn't seem to come on again so I set the knob higher it comes on again and so on. I presume this is not intended behaviour ... though it does help save gas ?

You might be setting the temp a little too low

Try getting a simple thermometer and see if the set temperature bears any relationship to the actual.
Also the little temperature reader could be blocked with fluff or dust.

If you are using the van parked up as a home office or extra accommodation why not get an 11kg bottle of propane and leave it outside using a longer hose.
The butane you're using will stop gassing when the temperature drops towards 0°C (it can happen when the ambient temperature drops to 3 or 4 °C depending on the location where its stored) and the heating will stop working. Propane keeps gassing to - 42°C.
The connection on the 11kg propane is the same as the one on the small butane and the regulator should also work perfectly.
Finally, the larger bottle is a cheaper way to buy the gas per kg/ltr.
