Tyres

Was discussing tyres with a mate who drives a commercial van - a Merc Sprinter I think - and he said he preferred 6 ply as they were a softer tyre and he preferred the grip. He said that with 8 or 10 ply the back end got jittery in the wet on roundabouts etc. But he agreed that 3 -1/2 ton on 6 ply wasn't the best idea either. His load weight is negligible.

I presume he's right ?

He's right. Delivery vans are often driven in a hooligan manner and often with no or little load.
On the other hand, motorhome are driven carefully and always more or less fully loaded, which is why CP rated tyres are recommended.
A burst tyre on an all steel deliver van is an inconvenience but a burst tyre on a fully loaded plastic and timber motorhome can end up a very costly affair, particularly if the fridge or other appliance is sitting over the disintegrated plastic wheel arch.

Must a campervan tyre have the CP tyre rating when driving on the continent? We're due for CVRT next month and off to France for a spin afterwards, so best be law-abiding I suppose! Thanks in advance. Con

A CP rated tyre is not a legal requirement. An ordinary commercial tyre, as in a van tyre, can be used.
However, a CP tyre has an additional safety margin to tolerate a bit of overloading and gives a measure of additional stability due to having a maximum rated pressure of 5.5bar (80 psi) recommended for the rear axle.

What Baguette says plus if you are going to France between November and March and are going to be in a mountainous area you require snow tyres, ones marked with the 3 peaks. This takes full effect from November this year

It's a recommendation for all rear axle weights
See the fourth bullet point under the chart for CP tyres HERE
