Knowing how much water is left

Hi,

Currently with water I only know it's gone when nothing comes through the taps.

There is a low water indicator but it is alway flashing red. Even after filling up.

There is also a reading on the control panel but it just returns 0. This did return non zero readings for a while after getting the camper. Other functions and readings on the control panel all work fine, it is just the water that doesn't.

Wondering what may be up. Is there a sensor in the tank that may be gone ? Or a manual step that needs to be done after refilling.

Would there be another way or trick for getting an idea of the water level ? The tank underneath is a dark colour so I can't get an idea from looking at it how much is left.

A clear pipe plumbed into the tank from the bottom to the top will show the level ,the water will rise in the pipe at the same level as the water in the tank.

I have a 4” inspection cap on the top of the tank under one of the hab seats which I peek through

There could be a conductance sensor or float in the tank. sensor might be broken or the float stuck. You won't really know without having a look inside. Maybe a continuity test on the contacts from the sensor might tell you something.

It actually seems to be working again for now. I turned the main battery control panel off an hour ago as I could hear the fridge taking a couple of goes to come on and the leisure battery voltage was reading low.

When I turned it on again, the red led indicator stayed off and the reading is now consistently showing 46 (on previous occasions consecutive button pushes showed different readings). I wonder can this also be related to how I park ? I'm using it off grid at the moment and am rarely completely flat.

Either way I'd prefer have something else other than dodgy electronics and like the idea of a pipe plumbed in. Is that a common workaround ? Something that any RV dealer/builder should be able to do ?

"look inside". Is this normally possible ? The tank is well under the camper and the only accessible thing I've noticed is the drain tap. When it dries up though I'll have a good look underneath to see what else on it may be accessible
