Campsite water hose and connectors

Just wondering what the tap setup typically is in campsites for refilling the water tank ?

At home I've use a hose reel, the outside tap is serrated so the hose can just be pushed on (and secured with a jubilee clip if you wish). The reel however is quite big and I'd prefer not to take it with me.

Would a short length of hose pipe work ? Are you likely to be able to drive up to a tap, find it has a serrated edge, put the hose on and fill ?

Or is a range of connectors and a long length of hose needed ?

You will come across a sorts or taps, You can get flat water hose from most camper suppliers, or ordinary water hose about 10mtrs, and got to the hardware and get a comby set of garden hose adaptors, including the rubber push on type with the thumb screw jubilee clip.
If you have the space, a lot on people carry a watering can, for when your set up for a while and don't want to move the van to get water,

Most of the sites have a hose attached to the tap so no need to carry anything.
But as Martin said, you can pick up adaptors easily enough and I carry a 10 litre watering can as well

If there is a hose attached, make sure you run it off a bit, especially if the weather is hot, bring sterilsing wipes to give the end a good clean, you will be horrified to see what people do with fixed hoses.

Thanks Guys. Like the watering can idea. There is a shallow storage area in the roof of the camper which takes a couple of fold up chairs and bodyboard. I'll probably be able to squeeze a can in there too.

Get a set of Hozelock adaptors. This is the screw on adaptor, the white bit converts it to a smaller thread size. Don't lose the rubber washers.

Get both sizes of kitchen tap adaptor.

I carry a length of hose as well. Make sure any hose you carry is clean an dry after each trip, legonaires disease lurks in wet stored hoses. I have a 10m lenght I bought from Amazon.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/pr…UTF8&psc=1

Carry some way of filling your tank without driving to the fill point.

To keep the water topped up I use a plastic watering can. A length of plastic pipe about 30 cm long and around an inch and a quarter diameter is very handy sometimes to just slip over the tap outlet. That's if I can't get near the tap with a hose.

I would go with the advice from Pirahna (post #6)
I never trust the hoses at filling points as you never know what contaminants may lurk inside, also some are ordinary garden hoses that can taint the water with a plastic taste after a while as they start to break down. It's best to have your own food-grade hose, like the Amazon one mentioned.
Disregard the above if you never intend to drink the water from the onboard tank

If you do get a long hose cut it one-third/two-thirds so you have a choice of three different lengths depending on the distance from the tap, that means you only have to take out the long bit or the two joined together if you are a distance from the tap.

That's what I have and 95% of the time the short bit does the job.

I don’t drink from on board tank and O carry a 20 L water drum and a small funnel. That way I just run the hose into the funnel and direct that into the drum
So no connectors needed. The I use the funnel again in the side of the van when I pour the water in. Quite heavy but fool proof. I played about with a 12v pump to draw the water into the van but pouring it in is much quicker. I carry a small length of hose in case I am able to get close enough to a water point.

When I'm going away and likely to be on a campsite pitch for an extended period I bring a 25 litre drum and a small submersible pump so I don't need to move the mh to a service bay. If there isn't a grey water drain on the pitch I use the cassette to transfer the grey water. If there is a grey water drain I use a length of the grey flexible grey water pipe commonly used on caravans to connect directly to the drain.
I usually use bottled water for drinking, you can buy an eight litre bottle for less than €2, but use the tank water for everything else including making tea and coffee.

Thanks guys.

Vaguely remember seeing that hozelock adapter set in one of woodies or B&Q.

Good tips on the hose pipe too. Hadn't considered contamination but with the camper being from 1998 (and the tank presumably as old) have yet to drink water from the tap. Probably will though.... in my younger travelling days made decisions in India and South America to just drink tap water and seemed to have no more (in fact I'd say less) water related issues than other travellers.

Good to understand the risks though.

This post answered my next question for me. Thanks for the tips. It's a great resource having people who have done all this before.

Well worth having a container to cart grey water away in case you can't get close to a dump.

Randomly in France and at some marinas I have needed a male fitting like this one. https://www.handyhardware.ie/H…Y4QAvD_BwE
For my grey I use a folding bucket 10 or 12 ltr capacity as it takes up less room than a container, the bucket is also useful for washing the van, where permitted.
