Refilling Gas Bottles in Ireland

Hi All,
Can I bring my gas bottles to a local Woodies type place to get refilled? They are still half full so I don't want to buy full ones.

I don't have any adaptors or anything like that on them, just a standard bottle of 11kg propane gas.

Totally illegal, not a chance not only at Woodies but anywhere.

You're having a laugh. 😁

Yes, if you have an adaptor, can get away with it, know the exact weight of gas you need to top up and leave the 20% expansion space needed.

So not very likely.

Even those with the adaptors that are not recommended by the gas companies, but are not illegal, usually only fill empty bottles so they know exactly what to put in. I do it with my house bottles regularly for my cooker amongst other things. Been doing it years, plenty do. Nothing dangerous at all if you know how to do it.

You can buy proper bottles that have an automatic cut off which are ideal for a motorhome. But most don't bother in ROI as the filling stations are scarce, unless they visit the continent a lot. I always install the proper ones in a motorhome, just makes sense.

Gaslo
Gas-it (diy purchase and install)

And others.

I always have a full 13kg and a 6kg as spares at home. When I go on the longer holidays I always replace half used ones with the full ones. I finish off the half used ones with the barbecue at home and in the van and the gas cooker at home then replace them when empty. In the winter time I carry the 2x13kgplus 6kg. House is coming down with gas bottles but it works for me

Oh wow, hadn't a clue it was illegal. You learn something new everyday eh. Thanks for the info. I'll just replace them with full ones so, I reckon they will need to be two full bottles to get me through the trip. Thanks again ,👍

If you can it's worth while to get two extra bottles, does your gas supplier charge for bottles, or do you know anyone who has spares, when are you going away have you time to hunt around?

You can buy an in-line guage which connects to the regulator then the cylinder. It will give you a rough guide as to the amount of gas in the cylinder. I have one for my refillable gaslow cylinder

Why not 'bite the bullet' and get a legal refillable system fitted? SEE HERE. One cylinder kit will do and you can keep the second ordinary cylinder in place as an emergency backup.
I got a two-cylinder kit a few years ago and the second cylinder has yet to come into use because I just top up the one turned on when it's going low at a service station that sells LPG.
People will tell you it's difficult to find a service station selling LPG in Ireland but there are enough to keep from running out completely and if the second cylinder is a regular exchange type you're well covered.
In Europe, there is no scarcity of service stations with LPG
Have a look at https://www.mylpg.eu/

Is there much setting up to do, or do I just need to buy the refillable cylinder, connect it to my MH and then I can rock up and have that refilled at a service a station?

Not that much setting up to do, although I did put my filling point outside the gas storage box, cut a hole in my lower skirt (Aluminium) fed the pipework back into the storage box & connected to the cylinder. I used my original regulator which is already connected to the vans system. Make sure that all the connections are tested before use for leaks though. When filling have washing up liquid around the joints.
