There was a post up here I'm sure some months ago, about importing spare wheels complete with tyres, at a very reasonable cost. Just back from France, and after getting a blowout on the motorway, the repair kit wasn't worth a fart with half the tyre dissappearing into the sunset.
If anyone knows of the post or link, I'd appreciate it.
Cheers all 😃

Rob what exactly are you looking for.
I got a wheel with a new tyre and carrier, from Bunclody dismantles. But the whole thing jack Included takes 45kg from the payload.
On real terms that's 60 bottles of wine 😡

Had a blast Ally. Went down to St maxime and travelled around for a while. Beer was expensive naturally, but diesel in the supermarkets was only 2.08 a litre compared to 2.32 on the motorway.
Blow out on the motorway cost 970 euro to sort.
220 for a dodgy used tyre and 750 to get towed of the motorway.
The breakdown don't accept breakdown recovery, you now have to pay and claim it back. Have done all the paperwork and claim forms, so this will be interesting.
But 2 hrs after we stopped we were on the road again.

After the blow out Martin I felt very exposed driving without a backup wheel. If I'd got a puncture It would be a 2nd call out to get it sorted. Like the idea of being able to change a wheel and head to a tyre shop for a repair.
And yeah, 60 bottles of wine is a big loss, but we travel with about 350kgs to spare, so we would be ok.
Got the can weighed in whites agri in lusk for 25 euro before we left.

And on the Thursday before we sailed I felt sh*t. Turns out we both got covid ffs.

Yeah dave, and absolutely no qualms about it. I was more annoyed about paying 220 for the dodgy tyre, had to reinflate it about 3 times.

your base vehicle is a transit ,so you shouldn't have a problem getting a spare wheel and Tyre in good nick.I wouldn't be concerned about a van Tyre they are designed to carry full loads, and it is the spare, more important is where are you going to fit it, and I would suggest a 2.5 ton trolley jack and axle stands.I'm lucky as there is loads of room for the whole thing underneath between the chassis rails where it would have fitted in the normal Sprinter Bus

Im glad you got the blow out sorted sounds like a nightmare and expensive it will be interesting to hear how you go with your insurer !
To date we have been lucky and never had to stop on a payage but your experience got me thinking as our payload would not allow us to carry a 45kg spare wheel so we would have no choice but to call for assistance . can I ask how did they come up with the €750 figure , https://www.autoroutes.fr/en/breakdown-service.htm
The last time we checked at whites way bridge fully loaded with 20l of water we only had 45kg to spare , I am surprised your available pay load is so high unless of corse its rated above 3500kg ?

Speaking of reinflating does the pump which plugs into the cig lighter socket work on motorhome tyres ?
Also, I found a jack rated at 1750 in the garage. Will this lift a 3500 unit to allow a wheel change ?

Thanks Martin, know this dismantlers from when I lived in tallaght. Although there is no spare, the van comes with a jack which I presume is certed to 3.5k

The 12v pump works alright Dave, except you need another vehicle as the lead doesn't reach to the back tyres. I thought there might have been a 12v socket in the garage somewhere, but there isnt.
There is a jack supplied with the van, must check its load Weight.
And thanks for the acsi card, worked a treat.

If the payload is tight consider just taking a spare tyre. At least then you have the correct replacement tyre on hand if the dreaded happens.

Carrying only the spare tyre, without the wheel, would be option for France. The pump supplied in my van will pump 6 bar, but it recommends only using the 125amp power outlet and with the engine running, and suggest jacking up the wheel, ( but they don't supply a jack)
The pump you get, to run on a regular cigarette lighter socket, will probably overheat the socket and blow the fuse before it inflates a tyre to 5/6bar

I have pumped a 16” wheel from completely flat to 65psi before now but stopped halfway to let the pump cool. Cig socket didn’t overheat

Cut off the cigarette plugtop, extend the cable a couple of metres and fit two crocodile clips to clip the pump directly on to the battery.

Yeah I found that Martin when I try to inflate it, the pump overheats. Makes you wonder why they supply it

This is the thing ally. Before I left I was unsure about this particular tyre, but was assured it was fine. I should have gone with my gut feeling. I think these might be the original tyres as there is only 28k miles on the click, 24k when I got it. As the van is 12 years old now, and if these are original tyres, even though they have plenty left on them, I am thinking of changing them all. I know there is a number on the tyre for the year of manufacture so I will check that tomorrow.

I had a blowout on a French motorway years ago. It was a bit hairy for a while until I got it stopped. I rang the motorway services and police came out, coned off the inside lane as there was no hard shoulder until I changed the tyre.
