Internet on the move

Hi All,

I am new to camping and am looking for some advice when it comes to internet connectivity. have 2 kids who love to watch netflix & Youtube want to avoid using my existing phone for hotspotting as it is a company phone and is already using considerable data. Any suggestions?

Get a mifi and a sim with loads of data on it. Pick the network which gives the best value/coverage where you like to go

If you have a spare phone get vodafones sim only red unlimited. It gives unlimited everything at home and while roaming in Europe.
It's what I have and it's no bother streaming video content as long as the signal strength gives at least a 4Mbps download speed

This is the setup I use, it's a Tesco €15 Sim top up for 15GB and double data if you have a Tesco club card for a 28day package on the three network, and you must top if up every six months, so you realy only have to top it when you use your Motorhome.The TPLink comes with a mains plug, so I got a 12 power supply for use in the M/H,
If you use the Sim card it in a phone to hot-spot, there is a calls and tx deal include. With the TPLink, If there is no three service, I can put my Vodafone Sim in it.

I'm using Giffgaff SIM only . For £15 for the month you get unlimited calls and texts to UK , but the roaming data is restricted to 20gb. It's fast , I just set up a wifi hotspot on and old Android phone. Works well for us, but our kids aren't with us, so no streaming or online games.

Here is a guide to the amount of data streaming uses per hour
SD quality (480p video) – 0.7GB (700MB) per hour.
HD quality (between 720p and 2K) – 0.9GB (720p), 1.5GB (1080p) and 3GB (2K) per hour.
4K Ultra HD quality – 7.2GB per hour.

Depending on on the quality settings 20GB might not last very long.

A proper router that sprinter has posted will have a much much better signal than a phone or a dongle.

5g routers are still stupid prices but 4g quite cheap, make sure it can be used by 12v and handy if you can buy one that also accepts an aerial like a tplink mr600 or similar.

This is what a proper forum is, some new member nobody knows, asked strangers on the forum ,that they don’t know about Wi-Fi connectivity in a van/mh,and the depth of knowledge ,range of answers and courteous reply’s are simply fantastic ,proper forum

This is from parked at Stradbally Co Kerry.
first is TPLink with a 3 Sim
Second is the Vodafone phone.

So you can see the the difference the TPLink makes,over using the phone as a hot-spot.

10 Mbps is fine for most requirements including video streaming.
If roaming the 19GB per month cap 3 imposes makes them unsuitable for video streaming which eats up between 1 and 3 GB per hour depending on definition setting, against Vodafones unlimited data while roaming.

This was done this morning using my android phone connected via WiFi to a WiFi hotspot created on another android phone. Giffgaff SIM card. Jard Sur Mer in the Vendée. I'm sure the TPlink will make a difference , perhaps with the number of connected devices. I have 5 devices connected to the WiFi hotspot , but none of them are streaming video . If you don't need to stream video it's maybe worth trying an old android phone as a hotspot. I have a tplink with me , but haven't used it yet.

I did just that this morning and with the Vodafone sim in the TPLink and the download was over 100 but the upload was 0.65.?
