Question Re engine lights

Hey all,

Just looking for a little advice on the possible cost of repairs! I’m currently driving around France in my 2005 T5 campervan and two orange lights popped up on my dash today; The ab s and the anti skid (triangle with anti clockwise arrow). Funny thing is I wasn’t even braking when they came on! So a bit of Googling tells me that it’s often a sensor issue rather than a brakes issue. My boot warning light is constantly on for the last two weeks as well even when it’s locked so I’m thinking my sensors are at the end of their days!

My question is, how much should I expect to pay to get the Ab S checked out? At home or in France? I’m nervous about taking a chance when it comes to brakes!

Also on a possibly related note, I’m losing a bit of power when I’m on steep or long hills. Worth getting checked out abroad or wait til I get home in July? Or is this just inevitable in a 17 year old camper?

Thanks all!

Nothing that you have is going to be fixed cheaply in France, but it desnt seem too bad either. The ABS and antiskid are very likely sensor related and will be a cheap fix back home (I drive a VW crafter Moho and a VW passat). Ive driven for months with the ABS/skid fault before I got round to fixing it myself (there was a bit of corrosion on ABS wire that was causing the fault). As for loosing power it could be so many things. If you have no untoward smoke, id just drive on. Ive broken down abroad, and they wu=ill take ages to look at it. \they wont necessarilly charge that much, just wont have you at the top of their priority list. If you have breakdown insurance, id just relax and enjoy the rest of your trip. Power loss might be limp mode caused by the ABS fault. My passat has done that before from ABS fault when a snow chain broke the ABS wire

Question Re engine lights

That could be just the sensors, bad wiring or a wheel bearing that's where the pickup is fitted. Have you breakdown cover? Give them a call, explain your position and see if you can get a call out from someone with a computer than can tell you where the fault is, then take it from there.

I would definitely do this ,if you know you can get in somewhere for a couple of days ,get them out

If there is an ABS sensor fault that causes a engine light fault, does that mean the ABS is disabled whilst driving with the engine light on?

in my experience breakdown insurance stipulates that you have to be actually 'broken down'...i'd be amazed they would send someone to 'have a look'

This is probably a stupid question but if I called into a VW garage would they hook it up to the computer or is that a big thing they have to book you in for?

if you find one nearby, no harm in asking...its not a big deal to actually read the codes. They will charge

Personally I wouldn’t go to a VW garage. Look for an independent Auto spark. They should have a diagnostic computer to identify the fault and advise you what to do next. That will also depend on your plans and duration of travel before coming home.

Thanks all. You’ve put my mind at ease anyway. If I see a local mechanic willing to do the check I’ll get it done. If not, I’ll be visiting family in the south of France next week who will be able to point me in the right direction :)

Any garage I’ve ever rang even though I I wasn’t going to them charge about 120 quid for diagnostic check

They are not usually a difficult thing to change so if you are handy with spanners, but more likely an allen key, you could do them all for less than a diagnostic test.

I’m definitely not handy! Haha! But I could give it a go (or more likely ask my boyfriend to do it!). I’ll check if YouTube has any tutorials :)
