Without going to the Guru, have your regular mechanic, drop the oil and measure how much was in there, refill it with 3ltrs of oil.
On some of these gearbox the 5gear was an add on, and Fiat never admitted that it needed more oil than the 4 geared unit.
It's worth a try.

Good (ish news) - Sprinter - we put new oil in and got it running gears 1 to 4 with reverse, 5 in driving forward not feasible - awful sound. However from neutral to 5 it shifts fine with engine turning.
So now from 4 th to 5th - is that the synchronisation thingy me gingy?

Thinking now Gardiners although they say they may have to web search for hens teeth:-)
Thanks so much educated mindful craicers!!!!

The 5th gear Baulk ring is worn or cracked. I think 3rd / 4th & 5th gear Baulk rings are the same.
Get gearbox code (alloy tag at diff casing) and available on ebay.co.uk from a Latvian dealer. I’ve got them before.

Fill gearbox to level at bung and add at least 500ml additional oil.

JJF - wow - thanks so much !!!
Might i ask where might i obtain the gearbox code from - it probably would be casted on the gearbox somewhere - wouldnt it?
Awaiting the mechanic to free space in his yard to get it stripped out and up the road - it would be great to get this part underway as well
thanks again everyone!!!

For ref, how much and what grade of oil did he put into the gearbox?

Like JJF said, I think you need to go to country's where they still fix cars, to source spares, nowadays,
Also anyone with the same box fitted, should do the oil change, and note his other bit af advise,
"Fill gearbox to level at bung and add at least 500ml additional oil."

Paul of Gardiners in Cullybackey opened her up and the 5th gear is shattered!
Taken 2 week to get one from central europe - awaiting it to be installed and then allow the garage to get her off their ramps.
Totally embarrassed that the time taken with the delays on the garage .
Pray thats it all - halfords good offers on their gear oil currently!

Consider fitting the lower 34/53 ratio 5th gear and synchro if you’re changing the entire assembly. There is 2 options, the standard gearing or the optional lower ratio gears.
Makes a vast difference to the pulling ability in 5th.

And there is me trying to get a higher 5th as my 2.8 is roaring in 5th at 60mph sitting at 2600rpm.
Plenty of torque to handle the higher 5th

That's what i did on my 99 Adria....made a huge difference for the better... 5th gear felt and pulled so much better...no dropping gears on hills like before.... brilliant upgrade :ok_hand:
