Not necessarily so, empty the water tank and drop the bottles in through the inspection cap, job done!

Or just pour it into the tank, save weight on the bottles

What was this fella complaining about? I know lots of motorhome users push the limit and that's their prerogative, but if you get caught you can't really complain. The law is clear, you can't be over 3.5. He was over 3.5, he got caught so he got a fine. Simple as that. What's he whinging about? Ignorance isn't a defense. Also, he's a truck driver and he hasn't a clue about weights! What's that all about. I run a logistics company and if that was one of my drivers calling in and I heard it, I'd be looking for a way to sack him! These Joe Duffy callers are something else :D

Agreed...The reason I started the thread was not to be a sympathiser for his woes but to draw attention to the fact we need to watch our weight limits..

I'm new to the scene, I just bought my first camper last week. I got it weighed the yesterday. With a half tank of fuel, half tank of water and me in it, it weighed 3,250kgs, leaving me with about 250kg for an additional payload. It's just myself and my wife, she's quite petite so won't be adding much weight, leaving me with 200kg for the rest, more if I empty the water tank.

How does that compare with others? Do you think that's good, or bad or how does it fair out? It seems like plenty to me, I travel pretty light. The only thing is, I might want to bring a scooter / moped on the continent with me, so it might leave me a bit tight if that were the case.

250kg to play with is quite decent....The Mopeds will eat a fair chunk of that though.

Yeah, but still, if the average scooter is around 80kg and leave say 20kg for the actual rack, so a total of 100kg. That's still 150kg left for pretty much just clothes, chairs and cutlery. Should be plenty if my wife takes it easy on the shoes and accessories!

What sort of scooter /moped are you thinking about, that only weights only 80kg?

Don't forget, if you add 100kg at a point which is 1.5m behind the rear axle it will add a loading of about 140kg to that axle and take about 40kg off the front axle.

You can find the formula HERE

To be honest I just made up 80kg :D I figured something small and handy would only come in around that, maybe I underestimated! I was never any good at those "guess the weight" games at the amusements.

Don't forget to add the weight of the rack to that of the scooter before checking the increase of weight on the rear axle.
Remember weight will also be transferred from the front axle which could effect stability and wet grip on some hills.

Just upgraded from 4500kg to 5000kg through SvTech. My axle weights are 1850, 1600, 1600 now. Easy process I just had to show them the current Alko plate and a few details about tyre weight capacity etc. They sent me a new weight plate so have to register it now with the paperwork they supplied. No worries about that extra wine now.

Tommy,
Would you post blow by blow accounts as you go through the process of getting the uprate through the 'system' to the point when you get issued a revised Registration Certificate showing the 5000kg GVW

The technical SVTech bit has always been the easy part of the process.

I just filled in a form where they asked engine type/ size, chassis number, tyre sizes and load index, type of suspension and weight required (after speaking with them). I could have gone up to 5500 but would have needed modification to the suspension. Sent them a photo of the original VIN plates. I got a letter back to supply to DVLA Swansea to have the tax book amended. They also sent a stick on plate with the new weights in it. I noticed that axle 2 and 3 only went up by 100kg each but that gives me quite a lot to play with as fully loaded the rear axle was well short of the maximum weight.I filled in a part on the V5 where you tell them of changes, enclosed the letter from SvTech and posted it today

I did similar to Tommy and filled out the form. They supplied me with a plate to upgrade from 3500 to 4000 as I have air suspension on the rear axle. However, as Baguette pointed out, thats only the start. I have rang the RSA, Shannon, Wexford and the tax office in Dublin and all direct me to each other. Not one of them could give me a clear direction on how to apply. The latest advice I got was to write to the Central Vehicle Office in Wexford but as far as i can tell, they are only interested in VRT and the cost of "conversion". Im going to try it and ill let you know how I get on.

We just spent a month driving to Denmark and back and never got stopped once but I feel its only a matter of time that they start to tighten up on this. My concern is, if I uprate to 4000KG, will it affect the ability to sell it in the future? Does anyone know if needing a C1 license would affect the ability to resell?

Going back to the original weight is as straightforward as the uprating exercise.

To be honest it will reduce the number of potential buyers, but it's for your own needs and comfort your changing it, not for resale, if someone wants your van they will buy it.

But will it be any use. The RSA are a not fit for purpose organisation hiding in plain sight.
There's an American RV currently not being able to be tested because it has a petrol engine and the test equipment on the heavy test lane can only record diesel engine values. The RSA are running around like headless chickens unable to give the tester information on how to progress the test.

If its the same as the smoke opacity test used by the NCT the diesel test is laughable in itself.

The test regimes in general just can't handle anything that is even slightly different. My car gets a 0 reading for all of the emissions parameters because its a hybrid but could easily be tested if they were minded to. It also gets an almost free pass on the brakes, they just drive it down the road and do a quick brake test, they might have an accelerometer on board but no imbalance measurement.

Yes it will...l as has been said it reduces greatly your potential market but you only have to get one person to make a sale, I agree with previous post if the up plating helps you enjoy your van more go ahead and do it, we ended up part-exchanging our last heavy van and were more than happy with the deal ,

For me the getting stoped on overweight legend is like the being gassed stories that were doing the round a few years back , its always a cousin of a friend of a fella I was talking to in the pub that got stopped ;) ,

In saying that we had a major declutter recently and are now happy that we meet our weight requirements ... !
