I read a few years ago in the ADAC magazine the in Germany there is a graduated system. Up to 5% over weight it's a talking to, between 5% and 10% it's a fixed fine, more than 10% big trouble.

I only half listened to it. His combined axel weights were >4000kgs even though the GVW was 3500kg. He should have room to uprate pretty easily. However, he said he was done for being overweight on the back axel, he should have a very generous rear axel loading. I can understand how he may have been over the combined 3500kg but if he was over the rear axel weight, he sounds crazy overloaded.

No sympathy what so ever,

37.5yrs driving trucks and he never thought of the weight of the camper......???? No sympathy pay your fine and suck up up, the weight is in the pass cert of the cvrt .......
If "Dave" is a truck driver he will have had to do his CPC course that would educate him on the weight he is allowed to carry.....common sense would follow on from that,
So what is Dave's point I wonder

In years gone past I probably ran overloaded, mostly with bottles of wine. I am always careful about being overweight, not only is it illegal but if you were involved in an accident you might invalidate your insurance if you had a sharp police officer. When I got the boat from Larne I used to drive onto the weighbridge and get a ticket showing my weight

I got ours weighed recently, at a weighbridge. Total weight of 3,040 and it didn’t indicate axle weights.
Just checked the CVRT docket which does show axle weights, 1,554 and 1,584 for a total of 3,138. As far as I know I made no changes between the weighbridge and CVRT so don’t know why there’s a difference of 98k, fairly significant, unless there was a driver on board for the CVRT (I wasn’t there).

Whatever about the total weight, axle weights are a pure guessing game for the average joe soap.

I think this is all just a ploy, like a Camino, carry your essentials with you, buy everything each day, as you go along the Way,
In our case, water ,food, and fuel by the Euro, Max €10, for vans under, and €15 for those over 3500kg per day.
Leave home with a teabag, and two biscuits per person, in case of breakdowns, ( between stopovers ) and enough water for the tea and to seal the cassette flap.

Payload doesn’t usually come up in general description and we changed our minds on one model when we looked at details more closely.
It was reasonably good on the one we bought calculated on average contents but only including driver on board (have you seen the weight they consider the driver!) .
So when you add kids (ok may not weigh much) but then you add their gear, bike, buggies.
We also seem to stock up as if going away for a month and not a few days.

Drive onto weighbridge until front axle is on weighbridge and rear axle is not and get weight. Drive fully on and get weight. Subtract one from the other to get rear axle. If really pedantic drive off weighbridge until only rear axle is on weigh bridge and get weight. Weigh bridges are probably +/- 20kgs at any one time.

One of the challenges with rear axle is overhang. If you know your weight before France and want to bring back some wine then

New front axle load (new F) = F – [L x (O ÷ W)]

New rear axle load (new R) = R + L + (F – new F)

F=Existing Front axle load
R=Existing Rear axle load
L=Weight of new rear load(the wine bit)
W =Wheelbase(center of front wheel to center of rear wheel)
O=Overhang(How far from the rear axle you place said wine)

Units are kg and mm

https://www.caravanguard.co.uk…mits-4104/

I do think I may have brought back a bit too much wine in years past being unaware of axle limits but being a bit older and wiser(well perhaps less stupid anyways) I would be particular about weight as momentum = mass x velocity and the more mass the more you gotta pray!!

BTW If you try and keep the weight of the wine over the front axle then you may lose your license!!

If you just want to know, the guy's out at Greenking at the Beehive will weight it for you, for a €10. Not an official registered weighbridg, I think the Corn company has the only official one in wicklow.

When bringing back the wine, always remember to dump all the water, my fresh tank alone is equal to 26 cases of wine. That's 65% of your allowance. 😊

If you check the pass cert that cvrt give you the indivual axle weights are already on it, that could be used as a guide but if its over weight on the day of the test it will fail,

I'd fill it up, fuel water road ready, dogs and all, just to see how it usually is. You only have to add the Saint. You can always dump the water, if you find you need to.

The combined axle weights (when weighed individually) would be greater than the total vehicle weight would it not? Obviously not so if deriving one axle weight by subtracting the other from the total weight.

Not a reliable source at all.
My mh had to go through the test twice last summer, not because of a fail but because it got tested on the wrong lane the first time. I now have two certificates, one heavy and one light and the each show totally different figures for everything tested. If I recall correctly, the pass certs are at home, the weights differed by something like 200 kg (total of axle 1 plus axle 2)
The mh was in the same state of loading on both tests except for the second test there was about 30ltrs (15kg ish) less diesel in the tank.

[/quote]

Couldn't be. The entire vehicle weight is exerting a downward force on the axles. The only upwards force is coming from the ground exerting an equal but opposite force against the tyres and so on underneath the axles so weighing the axles seperately or even weighing each wheel seperately and combining will give you total weight. You could have small vectors at play if the van is not totally level but lets assume that the weight bridge is level and when the van is moving then there are lots of changes going on to cause the wheels to have different "weights" at different times but when stationary then each wheel will always report the same weight allowing for the accuracy of the equiment measuring the weight and the measurements being taken at the same height above sea level.

I measured my rear axle at 1620kg
my front axle at 1540
and my total weight at 3140kg
1620 + 1540 = 3160kg
I was told that there was +\- on each measurement so everything adds up there.

No you get it weighed, in order to know what it is, so you don't get into trouble, for overloading. Resulting in a prosecution, for one or all of.
Your licence catagory. Road Safty, you'd insurance, ( you are obliged to always be road legal ).
In France your vehicle could also be bimpounded at your cost.

A couple of years ago I read an article in the ADAC members magazine that the rules applied by police in Germany are, up to 5% overweight it's a talking to, between 5% and 10% it's a fixed penalty and over 10% it's serious trouble.
I wonder is there any such graduated response operated by police/gardai here or will you reap the same penalty for being 3% overweight as for being 15% overweight

I got Matilda weighed about two weeks ago, haven't got my shinny new disc yet.
1540kg
2080kg
3620 kg
Plated weight 3880kg.
Which means if we fill the tank with water we are overweight.

Which means if we fill the tank with water we are overweight.

So its fill up on site then empty the excess?
Do you need a c1 for that Martin.

That is what your meant to do, the water tanks, are 120ltr fresh and 95 grey, Pilote recommend 20ltr driving capacity,
but,not sure if other manufacturer, do the same ,or if anyone ever checked, or looked at the spec,s

Jami. 260 - Liath ,Susie and Me, = 165kg so if I fill the water tank I'd be overweight, without even a crust of bread, :o
