Visiting the WAW in August

Hi All,

Bit sure if this is the right place to post this but I can’t find a better one…

We’re coming over to Ireland for a month in August. We plan to do the Northern half of the WAW from Galwey to the top of Donegal. Our method is to drive short distances and stay a couple of days in each place. We’re pretty self sufficient - the main limitation is needing a black tank emptying site every 4 days max.

When we did the North Coast 500, we almost didn’t go because of all the dire warnings we were given of how busy it would be. Other than the formal campsites (which we don’t tend to use), we didn’t find this at all - especially as we tend to arrive places to stop by lunchtime. We found plenty of gorgeous stops - mainly in harbours and by beaches. So, I’d be grateful for some realistic advice/insight from those who have travelled it.

What I’d love to know is what the WAW is like to travel in a MoHo (in August)?

- Is it busy at the informal and semi-formal Moho stops in nice locations?
- Looking at the site finding apps there don’t seem to be that many places to park. Is that right?
- How easy is it to find services (water, grey & black emptying)?
- Are there any local conventions/expectations that we should know about (beyond the usual, sensible courtesies)?

Thanks a million

Chris

hi Chris,
no its not going to be too busy. There will be plenty around, but not rammed. USe the site map that ally posted and you will find plenty of places. The issue would be the cassette emptying, so you might need to use te odd campsite for this. We have not got a big network of 'aires' with cassette emptying. There are literally too many fantastic places to stop on your chosen route. I live in donegal so am a bit biased, but the top half of the WAW is definitely the best for the type of places you seem to be looking for and the crowds dont seem to want to come north of sligo (thankfully!). Safe trip.

Yes, cassette emptying is a big problem due to the lack of publicly accessible service facilities.
Our solution is to discreetly use public toilets. To be extra discreet, when necessary, I have a shopping trolley into which I put the cassette, in a bin liner for hygiene purposes. I usually bring a 3ltr plastic bottle filled with water for rincing out the cassette after emptying.
Lots of people will disagree with the above but I view it as just making and indirect deposit rather than a direct deposit into the toilet bowl with no harm to the environment.

I think there is a lot of negative views on this, mainly from non MH/CVs as they think we are going to leave places in a mess. I've emptied in supermarkets/service stations and even a pub (that one I did ask) - I have a blue ikea bag to put the cassette, but the giveaway is the gurning expressions on my face from carrying thwe weight :-)

As long as you are discreet and obviously clean upi afterwards there shouldn't be a problem, apart from septic tanks.
