It's designed to work on a vehicles air system so other vehicles have to fit a small aircompressor additionally to make the system work. It is effective in up to six inches of snow. In deep snow conventional chains need to be used, however I can see how useful it would be during a snowfall because as soon as the road became patch clear you could simply retract them. No mess and no getting out into the cold weather :)
