Stolen Motorhome

Came across this on the PSNI page. Hope it’s not a new trend starting.

Earlier today police received reports that a motor home had been stolen from the Tandragee area during a burglary. Local crews observed this motor home a while later on the Castleblaney Road near Carna, and with the assistance of The Graphites Tactical Support Group and police helicopter managed to locate it in a lane way with the two suspects making off on foot. Tactical Support Group officers gave chase into a wooded area where a police dog assisted in trying to locate them. The suspects made their way across the border where one was apprehended by our colleagues in the Guards. If anyone has any information that may assist please contact police on 101 quoting reference 1460 20/04/22.

I’m pleased that the MH was recovered and that one of the offenders was caught.
They are too easy to steal. I’m surprised how few have a tracker fitted. Even though having a tracker doesn’t mean it can’t be jammed or the tracker removed.
When I had a tracker fitted the person fitting it suggested I was best off not knowing where it was so I could not be threatened into telling a thief where it was.

I have them fitted to several vehicles and do not know where they are located but when I sign in to the tracking details I soon know where the vehicle is located.

If I had a crook holding a knife to my throat asking where the tracker was, I think I'd prefer to tell him.
For me that would be a safer option than saying 'no idea mate, the fitter wouldn't tell me...what happens now?'
Just saying! 😥

I think it is fairly common practice for tracker fitters not to tell you where the tracker is fitted. I had one on a previous car, it was an insurance requirement, the fitter installed it and I didn’t know where it was fitted. He also told me I was better off NOT having a sticker saying it had a tracker.
Personally I don’t care where it’s fitted but I’m glad it is.

Wire your 4G wifi router up to the switched live and you can hide your tracker in plain sight

I might get one of those trackers. Not because I have a fancy motorhome, but because I have a dog that might have been left in the van.

I'm an advocate of this cheap little tracker immoboliser, runs with a prepay sim, is feature rich and the immobiliser is a neat trick, it's hard wired so no battery issues but has a backup lithium battery should the thief attemt to cut the wires to stop it working.
You can set a geofence limit (basically if motorhome moves more than a preset distance, usually 50 metres) it will alert you, you can get updates if the vehicle is moving. You can text 'stop' to the unit and it will cut the van engine out straight away and it can even have a siren attached to alert someone. it has a microphone that you can dial and listen in to anyone in the cabin and a seperate input that you can add reed switches, a PIR or Microwave module to trigger an alert to your phone should someone break in.
Its actually an amazing little unit, cheap as chips and it works well abeit the manual is a bit 'chingenglish' but its not difficult to programme (all done via SMS to the unit).
There is 2 versions, the difference is that the TK103B has a remote control where the TK103A does not. It can be armed via the remote when leaving the vehicle. The unit is tiny, about the size of 2 matchboxes and comes with everything required to install, including the immobiliser crossover relay.

Dont expect quality of a thatcham approved unit, it is what it is at a price. I've tested it at length and it works as it should and definately gives me peace of mind and I'd be happy that it will work in the eventuality of something happening. Installition is not so difficult but a knowledge of wiring, fitting and programming is needed and understanding its limitations is important.

I bought from amazon, link is:

Just make sure what ever you buy is forward compatible as the 2g network is being phased out,
Most of the older trackers are 2g sim only.

Once this unit is in and setup, the hard part, is it just a matter of buying an ordinary sim card, Vodafone, Eir, 48, An Post, and paying the monthly topup ?

Yes, just add sim card . I use Vodafone as its only a tenner every 6 months to keep it current.

I was recommended to ask for an internet only sim for the router I got. Is this something similar ?
