Ceist agam oraibh (a question for ye)...which is the safer option and what is legal when it comes to turning off the gas internally under the sink or going outside every time? It's more convenient inside of course but is it legal to turn off inside and leave bottle open outside while driving or must I do both to be sure to be sure? 1000 thanks...Míle Buíochas

Never turn the gas off and in my previous van I drove with the fridge ignited even onto 24 hr crossings to Spain so I have a nice cool fridge on other side but there again I like to sail 4 sheets to the wind!
My current van cuts off the gas supply whilst driving which is a disappointment

A lot of vans are fitted with a slam shut ( crash valve) mounted in the gas locker, in a crash it will turn off the gas,
It can be switched on and off from inside the hab door,
The idea being that you can have the hab heating on while driving.
If you want to turn off the gass, do so at the bottle's the valves under the sink are mainly isolation valves for servicing the appliances, or an appliance fault so you can disconnect it but still use other gas appliance. If you use them while driving, you still have a live gas feed from the bottles going into the van. (think crash) It is not recommended to drive with a fridge operating on gas, as the wind from driving can effect the flue gasses and soot up the pipe.
When going on the boat, you are informed to turn off the bottles, and have to hang a card in the window to show you have it done.
Thanks for that foIks. If you don't ask you don't get and I've noticed that on this forum the good will is total and it gives great peace of mind to owning a campervan. Safety First for sure. My mother had great sayings as Gaeilge...Is fearr an ciall a cheannaítear ná an ciall a mhúintear!(sense bought and paid for is better than sense taught) but this time I'll bow to the sense taught!
For handiness, ,ve fitted a 12v solenoid on the low pressure side of the regulator. Switch off/on from the main switch panel. I never have gas on whilst driving. However I can have habitation heating on since my heating id diesel powered.

In 17 years and 145k kms of touring I've never turned off the gas, except when requested to do so on ferries.
I've a pair of these fitted which will snap shut if there is a pipe burst 'downstream'
BTW the pigtails from the bottle to the regulator have an replacement date, are yours overdue for replacement
Monsieur Baguette...can you explain the technical term 'pigtails' to me??
The connection between the gas bottle and the regulator
