Urgent! Dipstick snapped

Help I was just checking my oil. I removed the dipstick. wiped it off, re-inserted. I felt some resistance as I snapped it back in. When I removed again, the tip of the dip stick was missing. It had obviously snapped off, about 4 or 5 cm off it at a guess. What do I do now? I don't want to start the engine with that in the sump.

Plastic dipstick or maybe a plastic tip ?

My citreon berlingo has 2 down in the sump !
The 1.6 Hdi is common for it.
If its big enough it wont go anywhere Jason, the lift pipe wont let it up.

It's a plastic stick Jon. Thanks for the reassuring words. I was reading on another site about it and it is not uncommon and doesn't seem to pose a big problem.

I can't really picture in my head where it would be though. Is it swilling around in the sump, or is it in a separated chamber.?

Its in the sump Jason....As Jon said...It wont go anywhere. The oil pick up tube would have a gauge strainer arrangement on the suction point to filter swarf etc.....It wont end up in your oil ways!!

Edit... If you are paranoid you could try draining oil and see if it comes out....Failing that only option is dropping the sump pan....Not the end of the world to do either way.

This story brings back sad memories of my great great grand-uncle, he had a similar mishap. Not motor related though.....he was actually a professional sword swallower. 😳

I haven’t replaced the dipstick yet but I did try to dip a rod down the tube to have a look at the oil. It’s a flexible fibreglass type of rod used for chasing cables. But it seems to stop short of the sump which makes me think it’s blocked. I think the original dipstick snapped just short of the full travel of the stick and is now blocking the way. The sump might need to be dropped after all.

Would anyone with a Master/ Movano pre 2010 know, or can measure the dipstick length? EBay is telling me 515mm stick length which can’t be right. The broken dipstick is longer than that. ??
