its basically a filter which prevents the power from being irregular. A 240v non sine wave genny could produce anything from 100 to 400v which would kill most electronic devices. I know from experience!, we have a 12Kva at our house in spain and before it was fully fitted we tried to use a genny to run the washing machine and because it wasnt sine wave (we were ignorant of this) it fried the washing machine and almost set it on fire.
Jaysis, you have me worried now TFC!! We have a 4kv cradle genny at home that we use when the ESB goes off. I had our electrician wire the house for it when we were building years ago so theres a big switchover box in the kitchen to switch the whole house between ESB or Gen power.
Its a pre-owned cradle genny I bought from a friend who used it to drive power tools out of his van when he was a carpenter, so it didn't have a hard life previously.
We've had it in the shed over the last 10 years or so, and have probably used it over a dozen times in that time. The longest period was a couple of years ago when we had that very bad winter. We were without ESB for nearly a week. we didn't have any issues with tv's, microwave, PC's, etc?
Initially, I noticed the washing machine, dishwasher & drier put a lot of pressure on the genny (lights dimmed a lot) so we do without them when running under generator power, I put it down to the gen being a bit too small to run them. But for everything else we never had problems?
I must check it to see is there something about sinewave protection on it.

I know we once wrecked a £400 bench saw by using a 2 stroke genny without sinewave.
:stupid: (directed at myself)
I was put off using a similar genny with the Motorhome as I was told it would wreck the on board charger, yet I know Caravanners that have been using them for years without issue, I didn't want to risk it.
The problem is that in general a portable generator does not have the mass or a good enough governor to control engine rpm with quickly varying loads. They are also generally capacitor regulated which does not provide quick response times and can produce poor voltage regulation.
A few years back now the better companies ie Honda went to a situation where the generator produces a DC voltage and the generator has a onboard inverter which produces a pure sine wave. These portables produce voltage that is on par or even better than much larger generators at times.
It's best to check the spec of any generator you buying to ensure its well regulated

Hi Folks,
glad to have know this. On several occasions I thought of purchasing one of the Lid/Aldi generators purely for camper, but size of the generator, only, put me off. I presume the Honda type generators are perfect for Campers? Anything else to watch out for??
