Wobble

I have had the wheel wobble again, climbing up to the resort. I spoke about it a couple of years ago. It seems to start when the power is on climbing up the Alps. It feels like the wheel nuts are loose and the wheel is going to come off. I pulled in and let the van roll back a bit. Someone then said that the system gets wound up and creates it. Trust me it wasn't the only one wound up. To cap that the drivers door wouldn't close this morning, think its the frost. Seems OK after the sun has got at it. I couldn't get it locked so wired the 2 doors together and kept off the alarm. Isn't Motorhoming fun

Would one of your tyres have a warp in it , possibly with heat, just a thought

Could it have something to do with the lower atmospheric pressure increasing the pressure within the tyre and causing a distortion.
I once had a bike tyre burst, it was on bike rack I wasn't cycling, while going over the Pyrenees.

For the door not locking in the cold, I had that before in a old Citroen. It was the lock not springing back and half sticking in the cold. The cure was a shot of PTFE spray in the striker/latch.

For the wheel wobble when climbing, is it on a straight climb? Does it happen only going around bends of a certain tightness and direction (eg tight right hand bends)? Does it happen in certain gears? Sorry for all the questions but it could be anything from worn bushes and mounts for the suspension/subframe to worn engine mounts fecking up the driveshaft angles. I'm ignoring wheel hop as that normally happens when spinning the wheels when turned and I assume you're not driving like you stole it! The fact that reversing a small bit gets rid of it I'm more thinking a partially worn mount/bushing "somewhere"

Edit, I'm going down the suspension route as when climbing over mountains, the 'van is generally working hard and people's foot is on the floor. There's a lot of torque being pushed through the driveline meeting increased resistance of the climb

Thanks Joe there doesn't appear to be a certain time when it happens but think its in the same place as before I do drive it like I stole it to keep the momentum up. I ll get those things checked when I get back

Tommy could it be front wheel spin as you say it has happened at the same place as last time ?
That will give you the feeling of side to side movement but when you stop and move again you will have full traction.

Tommy, does this happen when driving straight with power on or is it when you’ve got a slight turn on the steering under power?

It seems to start when power on during a turn but doesn't go away when straight. It happened a few times and didn't appear until well up the mountains. Up to then I was flooring it. Did this before but went away

Wobble under power is usually caused by the suspension geometry being in positive caster.
In the case of the x244 ducato the caster angle is tiny, about .5 of a degree. So, if you have wear in the wishbone bush, especially the rearmost one it could cause it. The thing about it is it may only occur when there is a turn on the steering, caused by being put under positive caster when the ‘Ackerman angle’ goes just beyond its permitted tolerance. This goes to explain why you only get it very very occasionally and no doubt acerbated by being under high strain on the pull and the steering being put through abstract conditions coupled to the vehicle being front wheel drive. The oscillations will continue until you take the power away and allow all to settle down. It’s not an unusual condition and may not even show up on a geometry check. But checking the wishbone bushings and also the top suspension mounts as this too could plausibly cause it.

That sounds more like a nuisance than a problem and could be checked when getting next van service, save the planet and keep your foot off the floor 😁

As JJF has said, coupled with this.
were you carrying heavy weight over the back axle? The Fiat handbook specifies that the front axle weight should always be at least 42% (please don't ask me why 42%) of the total weight. The fact that the wheel wobble occurs going up hill points to a problem caused by weight transfer to the rear..

Another issue is the ice and snow build up in the wheels and cause the tires to become unbalanced. This can be a minor steering wheel shake, to feeling like the wheels are going to fall off the van. Once the snow melts off the wheels from the heat of the day the car should behave normally again.

Q, after driving in snow or heavy slush,
we're you parked up for a time, in order for it to freeze on the inside of the wheels, there fore starting to drop off when driving again.

Thanks guys for all those answers. There are some there to think about and eliminate.I ll get it checked out when i get back. When it happens it is quite worrying. I was just worried about a driveshaft dropping out. It happened once when i had a Kontiki. I'm happy enough about the weight, its twin axle and I'm not carrying anything heavy, normally I have the scooter. I wasn't parked up in slush or snow before it. My next journey is back down the mountain, ill see if its still doing it

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago, I thought the wheel was loose, I pulled in and checked the wheels which were OK. I then got my passenger to look at the wheels while I reversed, everything OK. When we resumed our journey it seemed to be OK again. I discovered not to long after that one of the CV joints was the problem. Best of luck.

Is there ESP on the van? Are there any dashboard lights coming on when the wobble happens?

If one of your wheels is detected as looing grip, ESP would brake that wheel to try and regain traction and you'd get the percussive ABS braking until the traction was recovered even though your foot is not on the brake pedal. The giveaway would be the ABS and ESP lights coming on when the wobble happens.

No there are no lights coming on. Its not like the ABS braking. Its a definate wobble. Guys with old landrovers would know the feeling, its like a speed wobble you used to get in Landrovers
