My 21/22 winter trip

I hope this helps someone planning a winter trip to Spain:

My 2021/2022 trip
I didn’t want to rush for my afternoon sailing from Rosslare to Cherbourg on the Stena afternoon crossing so I booked in at ferrybank the night before. As a campsite I liked the location and the pitch wasn’t bad, nice views. I didn’t use the facilities other than the cassette empty point, which to be honest was minging. Not a great first impression for mainland Europeans arriving in Ireland 1 night €30. Ferry crossing uneventful arrived on a Sunday shops closed.
31/10 then onto campsite Aire cost €11.10 inc ehu near laval. Nice
1/11 prahecq de la Loire (88161) free Aire inc ehu. I Would recommend.
2/11 commercial Aire saint germain et mins €9 inc ehu ok but not great if you want to walk a dog.
3/11 Commercial Aire at Orriule €8 nice views but not good for walking.
4/11 crossed into Spain via the Somport tunnel great scenery along route. Stopped at mercadona Jaca for shopping.
Sabinanigo Aire €5 inc ehu.
5/11 fuel camping Estepa, valfarta €30 for 3 nights. Ehu extra €1 per 6 hours. Plus laundry (honesty box = €46 in total. Bring supplies no shops or restaurants.
8/11 camping Algeria near benicarlo 4 nights €72. I have stayed here before and it meets our needs, short walk to the beach and about 15 into town.
12/11 Aire at castello de plana Free Aire very nice location often over subscribed we stayed two nights and were blocked in by late comers both nights.
14/11 camping Narangal Javea. I don’t think this is the best campsite but I do like the location it has pitches that MHs over 8m long would really struggle with.
our stay 9 days €174.60
23/11 IKEA Aire Murcia free good shopping options.
24/11 camping bulnovo/mazarron playa nice site on the beach good facilities €36 for 2 nights. This is mainly used by over wintering long stayers but it is a nice clean site and opposite the beach. The arrival/departure process is slow. Recommend parking on the road outside the campsite and walking in.
26/11 Aire in Vera. €14 for one night inc ehu. Too many bangs which upset our dog. Several other vans tripped their ehu. Water not certified for drinking. Near shops restaurants etc.
27/11 little Texas near tabernas €15 inc ehu. This gets good reviews in the location of western movie filming. Can’t say I liked it but I could see why others do.
28/11 Mar Azul laundry 3 nights €54. Clean well laid out campsite almost exclusively German long staying guests. Surrounded by growing sheds.
1/12 Campsite Huerta Romero very close to the beach. There is an Aire 200m away which looked nice and very popular. The campsite was very dated but clean and good access to the beach.
8 nights €152.
9/12 Camping torrox 5 nights €90acsi rate if you get a pitch on the upper level they are spacious and in the sun. Access is hard going in longer vans but we stay there because we like the dog Friendly restaurant 100m away. There are 4 commercial Aires in Torrox along side the sea all very busy/full. Torrox is a lovely town.
14/12 Campsite at torre de mar 6 nights €120. Tbh facilities were not great we didn’t use theirs and stuck to our own. Nice location large numbers of wild camping in the car parks around the campsites. The wild campers did not leave a trace as there were facilities available with a bit of planning.
Email campingtorredelmar@hotmail.com is their correct address not the one on their website. Pitches can be hard to access. I would probably go to another location if I wanted to stay in this area again.
We were going to head to Malaga and then head onto Portugal but due to Covid testing requirements and the amount of cases we decided to turn back.
20/12 Mar Azul. 2 nights €36 no Acsi book.
22/12 campsite Roquetas de Mar. Note phone reception woeful we decided to stay put and minimise travel and contact.
15/1 paid 24 nights camping €399. free Aire ubeda nest to police station free no ehu, nice.
16/1 Camper Sierra Madrid €12 per night inc ehu and showers very good.€24. Vet in town.
18/1 vets €16 at burgos walking distance to the Aire we did not stay overnight on the Aire. I reckon it would be noisy overnight.
Aire above Bilbao €15 per night 2 nights.
Brittany ferry Bilbao to Rosslare arrived 8.30pm on Friday night. Decided to stay at Coral Gables which has MH parking with ehu for €20 per night.
Total expenses included fuel, shopping, site fees, tolls, laundry, lpg, eating and drinking out but excluding ferry each way was just under €4000 for the best part of 90 days.
Slightly less than €50 per day. We could have spent more and easily spent less.

Yes a very different approach to our normal 2/3 days and move on to the next destination. But we enjoyed settling into a location for longer, getting the scooter out a seeing the area, shopping on the scooter making the need to pack up and move on less important. Next trip we are going anti clockwise from Bilbao into northern Portugal and the south.
Looking forward to it already.

Thanks for that Jamie. I'll be heading to Spain via Cherbourg in a little over six weeks so I'll be studying your report in detail in the coming days. Hope Mr Covid behaves and he hasn't any further nasty surprises waiting for us.

Due to the time of year I didn’t want to spend much time in France, it’s cold and closed in the main. That said the route I took made for a pleasant days driving. I avoided the tolls in France because the route planning options said there was little if any time or distance to be saved on my destinations.

I have heard that campsites in Spain especially the popular ones and the ones in good locations are starting to get very busy, you may want to email contact any you intend to use even if only the day before to see if they have space. I made a point of arriving at 12 to most sites and had no problems.

Diesel in France the same price as Ireland lots cheaper in Spain.

I'm in Spain at the moment. I've been avoiding the coast, everyone I meet is saying it's packed. The campsites are full and don't bother turning up without a booking. Legal parking is full too and the police are moving people on after collecting the on the spot fine. I think €300 is the going rate for illegal camping.
