Clothes peg on the top of my Truma C frost control!

Hi all...not sure if I'm going about this posting craic correctly but here goes! I joined a few weeks ago after picking up a 2005 Renault Burstner T 680. We've gone on a few over-nighters with the last one as recent as last Friday to Camac Valley. All is well and still getting to know the machine etc. I got new leisure batteries + updated lights to LEDs recently, adding in a few USB sockets etc also. Vehicle is in good nick all round. 2 things I've to work out is 1) access to spare wheel and how to manage boiler to prevent frost damage. I've her booked onto a lift at a local garage next Saturday to get a good luck at workings of spare wheel basket and how to release. Manual says you need someone ''very strong'' etc as the yoke is dead centre at the rear for difficult access guaranteed. I'm sure Saturday will tell all.BUT my reason for posting....when I went rooting today I noticed a ''clothes peg'' on the top of the frost control unit! I presume it's there to prevent the unit opening i.e. to keep it closed. This sounds wrong to me and maybe the unit is faulty anyway which is why the clothes peg is there!! Anyone any suggestions/opinions/offerings? Thanks in advance Con in Clare.

Welcome to MHC and you're right the peg is stopping the frost protection on the boiler from working , once you get the spare wheel off ,grease the bolt and threads and it will be easier the next time , they're hard work alright

Have you taken the peg off to see if the heater is working without it. I took the spare wheel out from under the van as I didn't fancy crawling under to get at it and a 16" wheel is fairly heavy. I relocated it to a locker in the centre of the van to make it easier to get at

That peg is there to keep the frost protection valve from opening and allowing any water in the boiler to dump. It should be held closed by being powered. Apart from working (opening) when the outside temperature drops it will also open if the habitation battery voltage drops (as in the battery going flat) or if the circuit is broken.
While the heating / hot water is on the valve will stay closed no matter how low the outside temperature drops.
When not in use it is best to turn off the water pump to avoid dry running after all the water is gone if the valve were to drop open.

I had been told to do that during the winter to stop the frost bung from dumping the water when it goes below 4 degrees. I found out the hard way it’s not a good idea let the frost bung do it’s job.JMT anyway good luck with your purchase.Michael

Our last Motorhome used to dump the boiler water but the current one dumps the tank as well as the boiler, Its most annoying. The previous owner used to have a peg on it but it was very hard to access it, I replaced that with a key ring through the knob and hooked onto a small bungee cord, it is much easier to let it up ans down now.

A refill of water, even the 120 litres of the tank is a lot cheaper than a new boiler.
If it's at home it's free to refill.
If it's away and cold enough to cause the valve to drop then it's cold enough to have the heating on all night and that will prevent the valve from dropping. So why the peg.

The first outing in the Motorhome was up to Treegrove years ago, I filled it at home and it dumped the lot on the road on the way up. I had to get a lend of a watering can from someone late at night above. I take your point but we fill and empty again when we get home this time if year. there is a bigger chance of me driving away with the dish up. i am constantly tuned into frost conditions here on the farm with many different things to be drained and covered during frost

The Clothes Peg Kid!!

Hi all, thanks for the replies and info. I did remove the clothes peg last Mon' evening and eagerly awaited Tue' a.m. to see the results and as hoped for the safety valve had opened and emptied both the boiler( and the main tank to all but the butt!) So the system works anyhow. I haven't gone to the bother of refilling yet and closing which I think i'll do this Friday. I've re-read the manual also and I think i'm correct in saying that the valve opens when temp drops below 8c. My next puzzle will be the next frosty night I will get the de-humidifier going to see if it keeps internal temp above 8 c in order to prevent valve opening. The de-humidifier I got has a heater/clothes drying option which should keep inside of vehicle snug with low temp outside. i know gas heater would do the same job but curious about de-humidifier anyway. I appreciate the replies so thanks a lot. I retired recently so have the time to fiddle around with this and learn in the comfort of my own yard before something goes wrong away from home. Great oul' Craic!

The valve opens at 4 Deg ,no need for dehumidifier, your just pulling in air from outside the van and drying it , when you want to fill the boiler just turn on the heating for a short while, close the valve and fill the tank ,simplz

On ours the system isn’t fully free of water when the tank and boiler dumps. I turn on the shower , wash hand basin and kitchen sink taps and a significant amount of water will flow for a short while.

I can't really see what they don't put a frost start in beside the boiler, to fire it up when the temp, drops?

Clothes peg quandry!

So I filled the system again and reset without the clothes peg and everything worked as designed. I haven't refilled since due to Xmas pudding duties etc but I'm satisfied all works as manual outlines. This time I think used dehumidifier with heater option on a little late in the evening but I'm satisfied now that everything does exactly what it says on the tin and the only error will be with the ''nut behind the wheel!''. I got the van on the lift and the cage appears to be a lift and push action without bolts on the cage. The mechanic was kind enough to put van up without any worries re' insurance etc and we both agreed it's a design flaw. He's going to fabricate a mechanism sometime and attach to cage and it least that might make life easier. More recent Renault Master vans have a wind down facility through the rear bumper. So I've bought some Tyreweld and an electric pump and we won't be stuck. Thanks for all the chatter yall!
