Christmas originates in the middle east even if Christmas as we know it has been heavily westernised.
If you consider a scenario where Jesus was an actual historical person, and Mary was his mother, the lady in the picture may in fact be a much closer representation of what Mary may have looked like than the images and representations we've grown up with.
