Is Your Ducato Leaking Oil

My 2005 Ducato X244 engine started leaking oil from the front oil seal on the crankshaft. 18 months ago while getting a new timing belt fitted I also got a new oil seal fitted.
The leak continued, although not as bad (there is 150k on the enginel
I started digging on various forums about the issues.
Many said the leak is the result of garages using the 5W30 oil recommended for the 2007 onwards X250 engines on the older X244 engines.
The recommended oil for the X244 engine is 10W40.
I got the oil in the engine drained and refilled with 10W40. The oil leak has stopped.
So, if any of you have a bit of a leak on your X244 (pre 2007) Ducato first make sure you have the correct oil before spending on new seals.

The opinion of many on the forums was that the engineering tolerances in the older engines are not as tight as in the newer ones, so the thinner oil leaks out. It makes sense.

Good advise Colin,

I had a problem where it was hard to start after about 3 or 4 days of not starting,
It gave the impression of a battery that was not holding charge and also would start straight away with jump leads,
I replaced battery and same thing after a few days,

I rang my local auto electrician to ask if he would recondition the starter, he asked what was happening and I explained,

He said to take the earth strap off the battery and clean connection, and then clean where it bolts to the engine,
Then same with positive at battery and also at the starter,
Sure enough it solved the problem and also saved a few quid,

A word of warning,
Something I discovered last night while replacing the Starter.
If you have to do any work, that requires you to disconnect the Engine battery, be sure you don't have the EHU plugged in, because the control unit, while on mains will get a low /zero reading from your engine battery, and will try to boost charge it, so you could have 14 volt x 20 amp. In the system at the main starter cable.
May not be a problem on a vehicle with a separate charger, that you switch on and off, but, on one with an integrated charger, watch out.
