Unleaded, and because they are E10 I had to use E5 super unleaded. 😡

E10 will be the norm in NI next year.

Ok we will give EV the benefit of the doubt, lets say we are facing Armageddon, I can't make Petrol or Diesel but I could make Electricity. now how do I do that? solar works better during the summer, wind and hydro during the winter. next question is how much do I need to generate each day to run say a Nissan Leaf doing average mileage. Can anyone answer this? I do like the Idea of making at least some of the electricity to power my Vehicles. Having said that I cant see me pulling a trailer with a EV Pajero for a long time.

My Kia Soul charges in 14 hours on a 13amp plug. If someone can work that out.

I plan to be fully off-grid by this time next year, or close to it.

You should be able to pull a trailer from the house to the front gate on a full charge

Yeah, but full charge in 30minutes at quick charge stations.

The newer Soul is over 300miles.

I’ve been looking at this too Pat. My workshop roof is lying south and would be ideal for a solar array.
Couple that to a 2.4kw proven wind turbine and maybe a 1kw peloton water spout and it’s doable.
My thinking being having an EV completely sustainable by self generated electric is worth about 10k / 15K infrastructure investment to go EV.
We bought a new car this year, we opted for a petrol car for the first time in 20 years after giving the EV, the Hybrid and the diesel all consideration…… thinking being the residual value after 2 years. The EV residual value is an unknown at the present time.

But, with my “pessimistic” head on, I’m also thinking what the ‘Government’ is planning to do to recoup the massive revenue loss that will happen when the tax take diminishes from petrol/diesel. We can be damn sure that that tax has to be got from somewhere ! . Road pricing perhaps? Not in Donegal….. it’s donkey tracks up here.

And the elephant in the room is the future of a reliable electric supply. The country has no infrastructure to support a mass EV migration let alone the demands from heat pumps etc. There is little plans for more generation, nuclear won’t happen here, we still think ‘turf’ !
in the past few months the grid has almost went down, plans to pull 100’s of thousands of the grid are in place should demand exceed a certain threshold ….. and it did last month, it went to 97%. Old power stations recommissioned to go on line. It’s all OK to push this ‘green’ agenda & the politicians will… it gets votes, and that is all that matters to them.
But when the persons who know, the engineers, the technicians the designers are informing them that it isn’t possible for a mass EV and ‘green’ electric future it is falling on deaf ears……

Maybe being self sustainable from an electric point of view is the way to go, for me the jury is still out.

I’d think that it’s not drawing max current over the full 14hrs. With max current on 13a then 40KW is possible. That’s roughly €8 at current prices.

I wouldn't be concerned Pat, by that time, you won't need the trailer, you'll be farming Chickens. Or we'll all be eating grass pellets.

Does an electric car save you money?

Its not the useual route that most folks will take but I switched my Mercedes AMG CLS (6.3lts) and my wife switched from a XC90 in the last 3 years to electric cars. Tax alone I have saved €8k and fuel is knocking on €6k, servicing must be up around €4k.

I initially did it as my company offered more incentives for the company car if it was EV plus the BIK but I have grown to love EV's. I put my father in a Renault Zoe and as he charges from his care home his motoring is now almost free. Most people who try one usually end up hooked.

I've been watching a relative and she has done exactly what that report is saying.

From an anti-vaxxer to a climate change denier.

Years ago they'd just be called nut jobs, but now they have social media to fuel their conspiracies and meet other nut jobs confirming their paranoia.

🤦

Consider this, we have a boyo
who in an interview on Irish radio, is bemoaning the fact that his crew are away from their families for 3/4 months, around the world, when he himself can fly in on a Friday and home again on Saturday, not one reporter, pulled him up on the effect, he is having, to our climate.
All our Poli-tic's, are sniffing his arse like the mangy dogs they are, including the Green ones, have helped, this man who's net worth of $400 million. And has a Salary: of $90 Million Per Year ride roughshod over a small community, who have no recourse.
And the reason is $$$$$$$€€€€€€€$$$$$$$€€€€€€€€.
