Importing a Campervan from Germany

Hi guys,

Hoping someone will shed some light on this..
I am bringing in a used Camepervan from Germany. It is being shipped in as unfortunately, I cannot fly over and drive it back myself due to COVID times.
In Germany, vehicles have to be deregistered so the number plate follows the owner. My camper will not have a number plate when it arrives at the port.
I understand that you can get a temporary export plate in Germany that comes with insurance. Apart from this option, is there a way to insure the Van based on the VIN and have a temporary registration number so I can drive it home and take it to VRT etc?

I remember years ago people using 'FOR REG' signs on new cars while waiting for their reg number. Don't know if it was or is legal though.
A loan of trade plates might be an option if you have a friendly connection in the trade.

That brings back memories......for reg............usually a liteace or a Hiace before 1990 driven by a certain type of gent nuff said

Borrowing trade plates is doubtful as you would need to be named on the garage insurance policy

When I went over , there was a problem with the money transfer, I ended up driving back on the previous owners plates and posted them back to him once I had it registered here. It’s definitely easier to get temporary export plates. Make sure you have both parts of the ref documents, there is a small one and a larger one with more detail on it.
