That's good to hear.
Did any of the rangers mention when the new owners take over?

Report received today 05/01/13

Quote
we were down at Tollymore over the New Year but had to go home for a couple of days due to work and when we came back last night the Travellers have moved in.
It is the ones that normally come but they have dogs with them this time and last night they never shut their mouths all night,we had to move away down the site this morning and i reported it to the ranger and he said that he will have a word with then so time will tell.
Maybe some forum members would like to know of this in advance of them coming here.

Yeah this seems to happen every year. We have stopped going because of it and we don't even go now in the Summer either.

Just Tollymore and Castlewellan.
The forest service have said they are paying customers and have every right to be there.
I have my doubts about them paying.

You a re probably right Mark but why don't we officially ask the Fostery Dept and also how much the nightly tariff is. I would guess that they are loosing a lot more than they are making from them I know at least 4 folk who have stopped going completely because of it. I've been told that it was still possible to know last Summer that they had been there on site.

Last time we were there, there were no travellers, and to be honest any time they have been, we never had any problems with them. But still always keep an eye on them!

Interesting, I don't use Tollymore as it is too close to home.

I am in Tollymore most weeks (midweek) though through my work and have commented on the semi permanent use by travellers to one of the forestry boys.

His reply, 'we usually have fewer problems with them than some of the leisure campers!!'

Certainly seems believable when you read of the problems in Castlewellan site with some of the 'guests'

I understand that there could be issues with many residents on any site (I have been beside a few over the years) but I have yet to be anywhere where problem campers caused others to leave the site.
I left Tollymore one weekend (because of travellers) and was talking to at least 5 other family doing to same. Overnight the noise was too much with engines running all night, dogs barking and running lose and teenagers urinating outside.

It turned out that several bikes and caravan steps were stole overnight too.

I wrote to Forest service and got a very curt reply telling me they were paying residents and had every right to be there. They failed to reply to my questions about the behaviour etc.

So roll on the new owners taking over. I just hope it isn't caravan and camping club.

Still reckon tollymore is one of the top places in n.ireland to stay, especially in winter!. Have been there many times, have come across travellers in the past, but thankfully never had any bother. Another good site just outside cookstown, Drum manor forest park, this site always seems to have a right few travellers on it, but again no bother!

Tollymore

Am reading these posts with a heavy heart. I am from down south .......and have found Tollymore to be a haven for peace and easy camping. Having being introduced to it two years ago by friends who are also from down south.......I have always looked forward to a stay in Tollymore. I have encountered the "travellers"you mention but can't say we have had a problem. I find Tollymore to be a sanctuary and would be very pissed off to think that a few gobshites were go into spoil it for the few who regard it as a place where one can pitch and leave the outside world at the gate.

Have no knowledge of it passing to a different owner.......I thought the government owned it ...........it would be a shame to see it commercialised.

Speaking to the warden just at the end of season and he made no mention of this, but he did say they will not spend any money on the place which he has tried to get them to do.

No problem. I simply find that Tollymore is somewhere you can pitch and leave all the hustle and bustle behind you. We have two beagles and find we can walk without worrying about traffic and as we are fond of being able to walk unhindered for as long as you want.......long may it last. Anything that would upset this should be confronted.......in a proper manner !!!

I have stayed in tullymore many times in the winter and its a great site.
Theres always been travellers there and it can be hit or miss.
There is usually three to four caravans near the toilets and they are quiet enough and then there have been occasions when theres maybe double that amount and they make it uncomfortable with dogs barking van engines running half the night.
Most times its grand and other times just drive on and stay somewhere else.

Related Story: Wales

Quote
Gypsies and travellers on local authority sites in Wales could have the same rights as other static caravan owners under Welsh government plans.

The proposals would mean councils need to persuade a court that evicting a family is justified.

Currently, anyone with a pitch on an official council site can be given 28-days to leave.

A public consultation on the plans has now been launched by the equalities minister, Jane Hutt.

"We want to change the law in Wales to make sure that Gypsies and travellers are protected from unfair eviction from their homes," said the minister.

Human rights

"We plan to make councils fully explain to the court why they think a Gypsy or Traveller should be evicted from one of their sites. If the court disagrees, the family won't be evicted."

Under the proposals, the government said Gypsies and travellers would also see changes to the agreements for pitches on council sites, setting out how pitch fees are handled, how pitches can change hands, and introducing new rules for resolving disputes.

"By strengthening the rights of Gypsies and travellers we can make sure that Gypsies' and travellers' human rights are protected and that they are not unfairly evicted," added the minister.

"We are also making sure that councils are able to manage sites well, so that everyone who lives on these sites is treated fairly."

The public consultation is open until the end of March.
