Looking for a campervan

 ·

Hello,

First of all, please excuse my English, which is not my native language.
As we won't set foot in a hotel, pub or restaurant for a long time, I think that the idea of a campervan to discover Ireland is the most judicious one.

We are looking for a campervan, ideally with 4 seats. High roof and long wheel would be great.

Our budget is 10000e max. We live in Kinsale but we can move all around the county to visit one.

We had considered buying a motorhome on an English website that offers really very very attractive prices, but I don't think it's reliable 😞 .

We regularly look at donedeal, but not much... if you own this vehicle or have any tips, I would be very grateful.

Merci beaucoup 😊

Marie

Be very careful of eBay. There are lots of scams there where the requested price is maybe half or less what the MH is actually worth. Never buy without seeing the actual MH. These adverts tend to be copies of genuine adverts that have been copied/hacked

As kabundi has said, you MUST view the van in order to ensure it exists. With the budget that you have, you will be buying an older van which means there is more scope for rust and internal dampness. These are the 2 biggest problems with older vans. The engine will need to be tested out too.

Browse through the forum searching for advice on what to look for in a van. Be prepared to look at and reject many vans before you get one in good condition that suits your needs.

You state you are in Kinsale. Can I assume you are living and working in Ireland for the foreseeable future. This being the case, be aware of the costs and paperwork involved in importing a van from the UK. More research, but do ask questions on the forum and people will try to help you with your plans.

Welcome!

There's a a bunch out there in Donedeal. But the list gets shorter once you figure out your budget and the distribution you want.

100% agree with kabundi on being extra careful, specially now these days on buying from ebay or any online site, unless it's coming from a reputable dealer.

Also, with all the restrictions I'm not sure if the gards would be impressed with you traveling all around the country looking for a campervan. Careful with that...

Best of luck with that, patience is key!

Thank you all for your good advice and encouragement. The site in question is not ebay, but a UK registered company, but their prices are too bizarre to be true. Even with the import fees, taxes etc, it's still really cheap but I think it's a scam.

Also, for the question of traveling across the county or even the country, I have my opinion on it but it is a delicate subject which I would not like to argue here.

So I continue my research even if I am aware that it will take longer than expected.

I wish you all a very nice day.

I think you have summed it up very well in your own words,(The prices are too bizarre to be true) (Even with the import fees, taxes etc, its still really cheap but i think it is a scam).
The import fees will always be the responsibility of the purchaser and not the person or business selling the vehicle so there is a major clue.

Importing from uk now you have customs duty, vat at 21% and vrt at 13.3% of saleable value here. That makes it very expensive. At least from the North there is only the vrt.

Hello,

This story is very complicated...Between the salesmen who want cash, who live at the other end of the island and who don't leave their 5km, those who never answer or who think that you waste their time. 🤐

In short, I think the best thing to do is to buy a van and convert it.
Can you recommend any companies that do van insulation in County Cork?
I just read the van conversion found here which is very helpuf but couldnt find any info about it.

Thank you

If that's what you want, sure. But bear in mind that doing a van conversion takes time and would probably more expensive than you think.

Fair enough if you were looking at converted vans from the get go, but if not.. you might want to exercise a little bit of patience there.

I sold my old campervan on March last year and as a seller I can tell you that the amount of time wasters is uncanny. Used to get an average of 5 phone calls per day, most asking ridiculous questions and looking to pay half the price (resellers) or trying to trade for an xbox and 2 double deckers.

So yeah, I definitely understand if you get some frustration from sellers. I think it's particularly bad with "entry level" campers.

Hold on tight there, something will show up!

I have looked at people converting vans and a lot put t and g in them that must make a van wild heavy ,if it was me I would be using 1/8 ply covered with wall carpet not only is it lighter but the wall covering is fireproof wood isn’t,plus the units some are making ,there’s more lumber in them than in my full kitchen 😀so if your thinking of doing a home conversation think about what your putting into it

I bought a van last year and got it converted last year. Roughly cost of van €12000. cost of materials €12000. Cost to get the van converted €10000 .
Then had to get the van sorted with revenue.
We are very happy with the result. But I'd say that van conversions are only for 2 people, any more and it's a bit of a squeeze

Am I reading that correctly. 12000+ 12000+10000= €34000

That is exactly how I read it David, it would need to be quite a good conversion at that cost.
However having said that if the quality is built in then that may be ok but the base vehicle would need to be well up in the years.

22 grand conversion over the cost of the vehicle, I’ll bet it was a deluxe job. It would probably sell for over 50.

Did you convert yourself?

It will be calculated on the estimated fair market value of the newly converted motor caravan. The vrt on the original van will have already been paid.

I am amazed that they only valued the finished van at €24,000.00

yes it's great. All I gave the revenue was the 6 photos to prove its a converted camper and the receipt of the van and all of the receipts of the contents that went into it. plus an engineers report.
