Are Generators required in a Motorhome?

I am new here and have been reading through the past messages. I have noticed mention of generators. I am planning to buy a Motorhome soon but don't really want to carry a generator with me everywhere. Apart from the weight of it I imagine there must be a smell of petrol. Is it not better to have good quality batteries or even extra batteries? I understand if we don't use campsites we don't have mains electric but surely good batteries will last quite a few days. Most motorhomes I have looked at so far have almost everything 12 volt so why a generator?

A generator in a Motorhome is something entirely up to the person themselves, certainly a generator can be a very useful if wild camping or if you don,t use campsites. I use a generator in my Motorhome only because when we are at Pipeband contests we are usually parked in the field or carpark where there is no EHU so when hair straighteners or dryers have to be used that is where the generator comes in handy, however a solar panel mounted on the roof of your Motorhome are just as good for keeping your leisure batteries in top condition and allow you to go without charging for up to 4 /5 days but as I said its entirely up to the person themselves and what they will want to use in their Motorhome. There are 12v and 240v power points in Motorhomes. Im sure there will be other posts to help you to consider the pro and cons. All the best and happy Motorhoming. Willie.
PS The suitcase type generators are very light ,quiet and require very little room and do not smell if you allow them to cool down before storage in a Motorhome

Thank you for your reply. That is fine. We will not require mains appliances so I can eliminate a generator. I accept your comment about the new generators not smelling.

do motorhomes need generators?

no..........
good batteries and common sense when off grid is all you need

most people listen to horror stories, buy one then never use it.

I use mine often - not to recharge the batteries (use the engine for that with LPG, + solar panels), but to power a microwave or a Philips Air fryer and sometimes a coffee machine.

However it is gas converted which makes it light, quiet and no smells, (connects to the BBQ point).

One other point to bear in mind is that it is a portable generator so not confined to your motorhome. I have mine adapted to also connect to a calor gas cylinder, and my boiler and pump are capable of plugging into the generator to run the house heating if necessary.

Thank you for all the replies but I don't think I will be needing one.
That sounds like a mad setup viktor.

Lol. Granted it will be used in the Camper on most occassions, but the option of keeping the house heating running normally during a power cut especially in freezing weather conditions is very attractive. Of course your home heating doesn't need to be on continually either so the option there is to be able to power other things like a mashine machine, tumble drier between heating cycles, and attached to a 11.2 kg gas cylinder would give you days of continual use should power lines come down with ice or storm conditions.

Effectively I'm not national grid dependant anymore in extended hazardous weather when at home.

Bob is right, do you need one NO
Viktor is right as they make life handy in the camper plus have uses outside camping. We have one and it gives that extra peace of mind, The microwave is a biggie for us and even though we have a big inverter a microwave will drop a pair of batteries quite quickly so being able to fire up the Honda generator is good.
Look around car events and bike events where there isn't any EHU loads of people with motorhomes have them. I would try and buy a good second hand one though as you will save a lot on the new price and should you decide to sell again you hopefully will get near what you paid for it.

As has already been said, go Solar and quality batteries if you don't need hairdryers etc.
We have never needed one. Our 120 watt solar panel keeps the batteries topped up very well even in our dull conditions in this country.

I agree about smell too. Our garage is below the bed and I would not want to risk bringing the smell of petrol into the van.

Generators:

Better to have it and not to need it than need it and not to have it.....

We have one and at times it has been invaluable. I agree with Robbie, if you can pick up a Honda second hand, buy it. They are very compact and easily kept onboard with no smell.

All I can say is if you are going to buy one dont buy a machine mart cheap one buy a honda.

I have a honda in Australia great bit of kit, I puchased a machine mart one in the UK piece of crap, uses more oil than petrol smells of petrol even when wrapped in heaps of plastic etc.

Having said that it depends on if you are going to wild camp etc, also seen more and been in more arguments about generators on sites including free ones than anything else so be warned.

Cheers

This is good information but I think it will be solar for us.
