Auto boxes give grief (google VW PDK transmission) ... there are specialists who can refurbish those.
The 2.5 is OK engine wise, water pump failure not uncommon (pig to fit, driven off the flywheel ring-gear) and heat exchanger failure causing water and oil to mix (mechanics diagnose it incorrectly as head gasket sometimes) .....
Engine pulls strong, loads of torque as it’s a 5 cyl, smooth and sounds great.....
Not a bad combination, not sure I’d own one though...... but then again, I’m seeing those through eyes that dealt with their problems.
Ally I had 2 Auto E 280 Mercs both from a year old. The first one used to stick in 5th gear and wouldnt come out of it. I threw a wobbler at Agnews Belfast and they eventually changed it. The second did the same after 2 years only it stuck in second gear. Both were the 7 speed auto box. I upgraded to a Skoda

Saying that, years ago MMM did an article where they showed the price of spare parts for motorhome base vehicles. Mercedes came out the lowest overall
Economies of scale, They sell so many spares they can keep the prices low.
There was a big run on crankshafts a while back, maybe they have fixed that problem?
