Shell in GB now removing LPG Autogas from their stations. I'm wondering is it still worth fitting refillable tanks - I was going to fit an underslung to our new van but not so sure now.

That’s a pain. I’m only after getting an under slung LPG tank fitted. The stations are few and far between in southern Ireland but I have found that if I make it my business to fill every time I pass one I’m ok.

I have been thinking about it for a while but on hindsight have never run out of gas In the summer I carry a 13kg and a 6 kg and in the winter 2 x 13kg and the 6kg. In the winter I have never had to resort to the 6kg

It's not really about running out, its the convenience. Fill up with diesel and fill with LPG at the same time, very handy and don't have to wait until a bottle goes empty to change it. Also no lugging bottles about....

Hmm.. I'll have to give it some thought.

would safefill be an option,as you can take it out and maybe get cylinder supplier to fill it maybe,then best of both worlds

Totally agree Ally but convenience is also about being able to get the gas easily. Its a no brainer if you spend a lot of time on mainland Eurooe

We have an underslung tank on our van, fitted mainly as a space saving measure inside the van. It is a 25kg tank and we probably only ever have to fill it once or twice a year. There are still enough places selling it that it's not too much hassle getting it. Though we do live in Dublin which helps.

The second reason we got it was that it would be easier to fill on the continent but have found that this is not always a good thing. As most of the gas sold on the continent is butane we have had a couple of cold nights (below about 5degrees) back home in the winter when the butane then wouldn't work for the heater.
We now usually fill it before heading abroad and will comfortably do 3-4weeks constant use on about a third of a tank.

We use both we just change adaptors and use the same pipe , we haven’t started using refill yet, so we are still on our gas lite bottles,

I've read somewhere that the safefill bottles aren't allowed on ferries as they are made from glassfibre and not metal.

In the safefill bottle video did the pump cut off automaticly ? Was it at the 80% full mark ? I thought you would put a mark at the 80% full level and fill to that mark.

our van had an under slung tank fitted when we bought it and i must say very covenient and cheaper, we're in dublin and not to far from us is a company who do fitting and gas sales, saves lugging cylinders around!!

Called into the Mulroys service station in Castlebar today to fill my tank with LPG. Unfortunately they no longer sell LPG.

Hi Stephen, I have a 25L underslung tank also. During the winter we would only get 4 days out of it. In the summer twice that. I’m amazed you can go for so long between fills.

We probably don't get away as much in the winter as most on here as we have two young kids in school but my summer figure is spot on. We've headed to France the last three summers for about 3-4 weeks each time, filled before we left and only used about a third of a tank for the trip.
Using the gas for toast and tea in the morning, some hot lunches, dinners most days and multiple kettles of tea throughout the day. Along with heating the water for the above wash ups and showers too. Have done multiple week trips to Wales at Easter too with similar loads using the heater too.

We do have a small compressor fridge which runs off the solar so don't use the gas for that. The van is a 6m well insulated Ducato panel van conversion with a big 1m tall by double bed size garage for bikes and gear at the back so the space inside to be heated probably isn't massive either.

I’m much the same except my motorhome is 8 meters long and uses gas for the fridge. I can’t understand how I’m so heavy on LPG?

To only get 4 days out of a 25kg tank does seem a bit mad, that would be similar to going through more than two regular 11kg cylinders?

I'm curious how much it costs you to fill the tank as I know with the cylinder style undermounted tanks the angle of the tanks is key when it is fitted as they have a float valve to make sure it isn't filled more than 80%. If the tank is mounted at the wrong angle it means the tank may not fill as much as it should (or too much). If your tank angle is wrong you might not be getting much gas when you fill it?

Is the tank 25LITRES or 25 KG? 25Kg is approx 50litres or twice the size

My tank takes 20 litres of LPG to fill it so considering the 20% safety margin I reckon it’s getting its full fill

I had a leak in the regulator, bulkhead mounted,while in France a few years ago, I was getting 4.5-5 days out of an 11 kg cylinder. That regulator was only 3 years old. Luckily I had a replacement with me

I agree that there are lots of sites listed on the app, but many of them sell camping gas bottles as distinct from having an actual LPG pump to re-fill the tanks.
