Waxoyl

Hi all.

Got the underside of my van treated with Waxoyl last week. Need my motorhome (autosleeper on a Ford Transit chassis) to last a long time!!

Since the habitation area (fibreglass) will last possibly 25 years and we spend a lot of time near the sea it seems to make sense to me.

I visited www.surecleanvaleting.com in Lisburn who also deal in Pre owned Porsches etc; after reading good reports on a landrover forum.

The owner spent a bit of time looking at the van and chatting about the process. My van is 2006 with 18000 miles so pretty good order.

They offer 3 levels of treatment.

1 chip off rust and apply waxoyl approx 190 but although waxoyl helps inhibit rust, it can be sealed under the coat of waxoyl.

2 chip off loose rust, clean and apply dinitrol (rust neutraliser) then apply waxoyl. Cost 400

3 as 2 but paint chassis after dinitrol treatment. then apply waxoyl. Approx 700

I opted for 2 on his advice. the van stayed with them from monday to friday. The whole underside, chassis and wheel arches were coated using 12 litres of waxoyl. Looks good.

Staff were friendly, knowledgable and interested and explained what they had done, the clean up and how to maintain it. (no power washing).

I spent what amounts to about 2.5% of the purchase price of the van so i reckon that is a good move.

The only downside which Was aware of is that the van smells of solvent, this should clear after a couple of weeks/

Time will tell, I will post an update in 10 years!!

All the best,

Davy

Nice report Davy.

I hope we hear more from you before your next report...

I know of those guys, a friend of mine lives in Lisburn and he tells me they have always been very good.

Hi Davy
My van is over 20 years old. It was waxoiled by a previous owner but I don't know how long ago. At MOT last month the inspector said the underside was absolutely perfect and couldn't believe the condition for its age. In fact he offered to buy from me on the spot! Probably like most of us you will keep your van outside in all weathers, I think you have spent your money wisely.
Many happy years ahead.
Brian

Money well spent.

I used to Waxoyl classic cars for myself and others. Waxoyl is only as good as it is applied.

Sounds like they done a great job.

Just MOT`d van today Why would you want to steam wash it,
I haven`t touched it in 2 years and it`s a 2004 van.
Surely steam cleaning will push moisture where you don`t want it.

I think the question was meaning steam cleaning after it has waxoyl done.

If your vehicle is not clean enough underneath the mot people can fail it because they can't check things like brake pipes and joints

Plenty of cars go through the MOT coated in Waxoyl - I have a classic car and the underside is thick with Waxoyl. Inthe 12 years that I have owned the car, I have never had a failure due nor have I ever had to change the brake pipes due to corrosion!

Pressure washing will not strip Waxoyl but you are best to recoat again if you do get it done. Obviously best to wait until you have Mot'd the vehicle and the underside is completely dry before reapplying. Unless the underside of the vehicle gets caked in mud or salt, I think pressure washing is unecessary and here is why:-

If you just wash your paintwork with a domestic pressure washer, it takes off the loose dirt but leaves a film of dirt on the paint. The same is true underneath. Pressure washing also blasts water into the engine bay, electrics and chassis as well as removing loose paint.

I keep wheel arches clean using Snow Foam applied through an HD foam lance so never pressure wash underneath.
