My mh is on its third timing belt and now due its fourth, now 15 years old with 132,000km or thereabouts on the clock. It's still on the original water pump, I was told by the main dealer that on the post 2002 X244 models changing the water pump is a job which can be done without interfering with the timing belt.
Before you go to the expense of a new water pump do check if it's the same for post 2007 X250 models.
Mine is an A-Class which is very awkward and the cost of the timing belt change with tensioners etc. was usually about €600 at the main dealer, Low Profiles etc. with the standard FIAT cab and bonnet should be less.

When I got my 2007 done it cost £400 with all parts ,it depends who you take it to ,I’m dubious about changing the water pump when it only has so little miles between belt changes our car has 130,000 miles waterpump never changed timming belt done twice I think the waterpump change is a way of getting more money out of us ,I may be wrong but I wouldn’t like to think that manufacturers are putting parts on vehicles that need changed that soon

Re: Waterpump replacement.

It all depends on the system, engines with ancillary belt driven water pumps do NOT require replacement until it shows signs of requiring replacement.

Engines where the TIMING BELT is used to rotate the water pump is a different story. When you replace the timing belt it is replaced along with the jockey pulley, any guide pulleys and tensioner pulleys and it is good practice to replace the water pump in these installations.
Why?
When the new timing belt is fitted it is tensioned to a higher level than the one removed to allow for slight belt stretch, settling of components and bearings and in these instances the lateral load on water pump bearings and seals is greatly increased, if these forces are applied to a used water pump it can cause early fatigue and failure, so in MOST cases it is good engineering practice to replace it at time of belt replacement.
Our workshop had a policy of fitting the water pump in every case where it was driven with the timing belt, if the client wanted the belt changed but not the water pump we had then sign a disclaimer to that effect.

It’s all down to the individual mechanic/workshop, in 30 years and 1000’s of belts we’ve had one failure, an early 1990’s CVH ford escort..... we’ll take that one !

I always get the water pump changed when doing the belt, also if the old one has plastic impellers change to metal

Great answer to my query but it can be an expensive one ,but I’m still apprehensive about the water pump the tension pullys should be able to compensate for pressure on the pump pulley ,I my be talking a load of bull ,but everyone to there own view ,I would only be changing the water pump on every second timming belt ,first belt 30,000 first pump 60,000 seems about right to me ,don’t hang me over my views

Timing belt intervals.

Putting my Ducato in for all round servicing and upgrading. Was advised that in motorhomes which don't do many miles/klms it's best to ignore recommended intervals because the belts can deteriorate through lack of engine use.

Any thoughts ?

Belts should be changed based on the time recommendation rather than milage. For the X244 engine it's five years, not sure what it is for the X250

Got mine done recently due to 5 year duration not a cheap visit but a no brainier, pointless risking it in my view.

Just reading through this. Mine had been last done in Nov 2016 in the Netherlands (along with a pile of other things when a Dutch person imported it from Germany). Checked it into EMC Autos in Ennis 4+ weeks ago and got it done early this week along with a service for 660 inclusive.

Very happy with the job, it was a 2 day job but worth the wait. I had tried two local garages in the Ennistymon area but neither were willing to take it on for various reasons (difficulty in getting to it, vehicle height, lift limitations).

Was told the belt was quite worn and needed doing. From what I understood, the water pump is driven by an ancillary belt. They had a close look at it and reckoned it looked quite good and didn't need replacing.

A noise started coming from the engine on startup once the weather got colder, the new van belts seemed to sort this.

I get my van serviced by EMC autos in Ennis and very pleased with his work and prices.
