Galway councillors to target campervans

Today's Sunday Times (p6) has an article which states that Fine Gael councillors in Galway "want to target campervans parked in public car parks and along the promenade in Salthill'. This is part of a campaign to introduce by-laws that will stamp out illegal camping in public areas. Ciaran Hayes, director of services in Galway city said " we did have an issue after the Volvo ocean race 2009 where the entire promenade was taken over by campervans and after that event we introduced the relevant by-laws to deal with that'. This article is actually dealing with the inability of the authorities to remove the 'Occupy' protesters from Eyre square.
Motorhomers are now being associated with protestors!
Nowhere in the article is it mentioned that any of these councillors mentioned the possibility of providing aire/stellplatz type facilities for motorhomers especially during large events such as the Volvo race. 6 sites down by the docks in Galway is hardly sufficient for the numbers of motorhomers now active in Ireland. Camping sites in Salthill have attracted a number of negative comments on websites for various reasons.
When are these local authorities going to realise that motorhomers are tourists and in the main, spend locally.
Methinks we are once more being associated with a certain so called minority ethnic group in some minds and not seen as staycationers helping the economy. If this seems like a rant.....it is! 🇧🇭

Ridiculous, who is going to be next to ban us. We really do need some sort of organisation setup throughout Ireland to fight things like this.

We were at Antrims Lough Shore campsite at the weekend, there are two huge car parks outside it. I asked why could we not park there and explained that Motorhomers spend money etc etc etc. The campsite closes December and Jnauary.

The answer was, you cannot and the police will clamp you, to get the clamp off is £200. A group of caravanners decided to stay there and could not be moved for 3 weeks, so we are all once again being punished because of a minority. The authorities really need to get it into their heads the difference between the different groups.

Two foreign tourist Motorhomers were clamped a while ago, what does that say to our visiting tourists?!

It's not the police who clamp but private contractors, if you carried an angle grinder then why worry

(stihl saw in garage) :)

Yeah I thought that but the warden said the council had an agreement with the police, maybe he was full of dung.

In fairness salthill was chockoblock during the Volvo, it was a disgrace really.

However on a good note, anyone looking for salthill parking, Toffs carpark is open during low season, high season barriers in place but we park on the road outside of the swimming pool....its a wide road, dont go too near the parked lorry bodies as they do move them at odd times.
