My van will be 4 years old at the start of January so I expect to have to MOT it. Midway through the year I upgraded from 3500 kg to 3850 kg (which was purely a paper exercise).

I have not received a reminder letter from the MOT people, not that it is important, however when I go online it would appear that I need to select HGV as I would expect.

Am I right in thinking that I need to choose the HGV 2 category (2 axles) which costs £76. It would appear that I need to contact them to arrange a time and date.

Confirmation or otherwise from any of you who have a 3500+kg van would be appreciated as the MOT advice lines are closed at weekends.

Mine is 3850kg too and I book it in as a car on the telephone and they give me the lorry lane. The test is the same as the car one but because of the night the van has to go up the truck lane. Hope this is helpful. You are better to telephone them to book.

Same as Jack, my van is 4500kg and booked in as a car. You need to contact the test centre you are using to make sure it gets tested in the lorry lane because of the height.

Thanks, Tommy. My previous van was 3500 kg so I normally booked online for an evening as the lorry lane was normally not used then. Quite liked doing the mot in the van as it was like mot of old. “Shake the steering wheel”, “foot on the brake” etc. Also used to find the guys easy going and chatty, usually very interested in the van. Think it makes a difference from standard cars with little interaction with the owners..

Motor Caravans are the same test category and price as cars. Although I do believe if one is too big for a car test centre to handle it needs to go to a truck test centre but it still gets a car test at the car test price.

NI's truck and car MOT/PSV/HGV/LGV centres are the same place, just a different lane. Always lane 1 for anything large from what I've experienced.

Our mot starts at 4 years and costs £30. I have been taking cars for mot all of my life (or seems like it) and my previous van was 3500kg so easy to book online and provided I booked for evening the lorry lane is always free. As I said earlier quite enjoy the Motorhome MOT. The NI website does not specifically mention Motorhomes over 3500kg , just HGV in its various forms.

It's already been answered, but I also booked our RV using the car booking and it was 5.5 tonne.

Took my 3500kg Fiat Roller Team 707 van for MOT today. Booked on line and arrived at lane 5 knowing I would be redirected to the lorry lane. Guy was at my window within a minute. Got your paper work, you’re not booked for this lane. Showed him the booking and off he went to check. Apparently my model is registered as a Fiat 500 Colour Therapy. Oops.
So off to the lorry lane for the smoke test? Yes, as your van is over 3500kg it needs a smoke test. But it says 3500kg on the V5 and that wee plate on the passenger door step. Ok, but we go by the plate in the engine bay and it says 3650kg. Oops again. Anyway it passed but should I be worried about the 3650kg plate in the engine bay.

What was the actual weight on the cert you got from the test center? if in any dought get it on to a weighbridge to find out what is the actual weight, also an email to Roller Team to ask what are they playing at sending something out with two different weight stamps on it. What are you suppose to insure it as and have you a license to drive over 3500kg?.

Congratulations, good for another year! I had mine smoke tested last week as over 3500 kg. Fair enough since I was uprated a year back to 3850 kg.
The guy was not sure about the fact that I have 2 plates under my bonnet. one for the Fiat cab, and another for the ALKO Chassis. I further muddied the water because Hymers carry the finished product vin plate on the side valance near the habitation door. He didn’t examine the Hymer plate, just wanted to confirm the chassis number and wether the smoke test was due, so I wouldn’t worry too much.

On mh's built on, for example, a FIAT chassis without modifications there may be only the FIAT plate but if there is an Alko chassis there will be an Alko plate and a final builders plate. It's the latest one which is the correct one and which should be recorded on the Registration Certificate.
If the MH got an aftermarket have uprate such as that done by SVTech the plate they issue could be a fourth one.
