Hi All,

If anyone is looking for any cameras work or equipment, I would be happy to help, AutoVision & Safety Solutions is a small business I set up, I mainly do camera and recording DVR's, Trackers, Reverse alarms and cameras and audio kit.

Well here’s a quick problem you might be able to help with. I have a Homeguard DIY CCTV + DVR. I can’t seem to find the remote control. The unit is now in standby after a power cut, but I can’t switch it on without the remote. That’s the only thing I used the remote for. Everything else was operated via the mouse and VGA monitor. Know if any way to switch the unit in without the RC?

Hi Paul... not sure if you’re supplying this type of stuff..
I’m on the prowl for a good low count full frame DSLR.
Canon eos 5d or eos 5d mk2.... maybe a newer model, depending on €€€€
Don’t want to go new, but a good older model would suffice. Glass isn’t an issue as I have a few but a nice s/h Canon 18-55mm-f3.5-5.6-IS image stabilise lens could be on the list.

Hi have you a picture of DVR? did you disconnect battery power?

If you’re referring to me then it looks like this

I didn’t disconnect battery power. It is connected to mains power but following a power cycle it is now stuck in standby.

Is there a rester or power switch on main box.
I deal with vehicle stuff usually, but I would of thought box should have a main switch on it

1. Is the Power Led light on at No3 ?

2. As Most DVRs are designed to be always on, most of them have no power button. To turn off your DVR, use the Shutdown function then disconnect the power adapter.

3. As far as I can make out there is no On/Off Button on the Remote..

The remote control Is adequate to operate the DVR, however it is not best suited to constant use. It is easy to navigate through the display modes, basic settings and menus, but slower and less intuitive than using the mouse.

Well the power led at no. 3 is lit. It’s lit red though. I assumed it would light green if I powered on with remote. But now I’m doubting myself. Especially after what you just said Hymer. Now I’m thinking I could be wrong and that the unit might be on. I only say that because I was in the attic where the DVR is just the other day to get down Christmas decorations and I noticed that the VGA monitor did not look like it would power on. It might just be that the monitor is dead and that the DVR is on. ???

I’ll crawl back up into the attic and have a look tomorrow.

Not all LED's are Green, some are Red & Blue. see screen shot.

Well noticing the VGA monitor had died is merely incidental. I put in another monitor but the problem remains.

So either as you say, the unit defaults to on when receiving power, then perhaps there is a problem with the unit, such as bad VGA output, PSU etc..

But are you sure the unit should default to always on Tom? Because all along I just assumed it was on standby and I need the remote to switch on.

DVR's are generally on when powered up, as so they reset themselves if you have a power failure etc,saving g u to have to reboot each time.

Well the more I think about it, the more I reckon there is a VGA output problem. There is no power on button on the remote and these DVRs tend to default to on, as you good guys have pointed out. My power led is lit red. My cameras are defo receiving power as I can see the IR leds on at night. And my connected mouse is lit up like a Christmas tree.

I will double check the PSU voltage when I get a chance on Friday, just to be sure. But otherwise it has to be VGA. I wish I had set up the networking on it prior to this.

Jason. It does sounds very likely that the VGA is gone.. have you tried a different VGA Cable: the old could be faulty.

You could also try doing this.. Use the No 4 on the back Panel.. The BNC Video Output: For TV sets. This should give you some kind of Video Picture. ( I'm Not to sure how much function you will have but worth a try ) one of these HERE

Very good suggestions Tom. It’s easy to swop out the cable and I have a handheld pal monitor with bnc input.

Problem solved. I checked the AC adapter and it was outputting 12 volts. I popped the lid and could hear no activity on the hard disk when ‘powered on’. Checked internal voltages which were low. Turns out the AC Adapter was being pulled low under load. Swapped out AC Adapter and all is working.

These AC adapters can be outputting a normal voltage when unloaded, but collapse under load.

Indeed. I got side tracked by the fact of losing the remote control and assuming it was needed to take the unit out of standby. It’s good to know that the remote is not needed. Cheers guys.
