Importing 30 year plus campervan

Hi

I'm thinking of getting a Westfalia T25 van next year. I'm interested in this model, both as a campervan and a project. The ones I like are generally late 1980s built. I previously owned a T25, non-Westfalia, and a Hymer C46

I was comparing availability and price and it seem sensible to consider importing from UK or Germany.

If, say, I imported a 1988 van and paid, say, 12-15,000€, what would be implications regarding

1. Import tax, if any
2. Registering here in Ireland. I believe VRT is high but uncertain if this van would be classified as a classic
3. Insurance. How would I insure van if I purchased in Germany and drove back to Ireland via France ferry
4. Is there classic road tax and would 30yrs+ count as classic
5. Ditto classic insurance

Thanks for reading this.

For VRT, any vehicle over 30 years old is a nominal fee. For insurance, motorhome/camper policies or classic policies should be available but you will need to ring around and talk to the insurance companies / brokers to figure out cover from the point of purchase until registration in Ireland.

Thanks for this. Several years ago I imported a Hymer 1994 van from Uk and when registering it here in Irl I had to pay a huge sum to register with VRT people. Is VRT a one-off, only paid when registering for 1st time?

All you need to know about VRT (apparently) :)

Sorry not many replies, I live in NI so only know about classic insurance there. Anyone else?

Thanks anyway :-)
