We usually head to France or Spain for our main travels but next year we are thinking of doing Italy. We would be doing the Rosslare to Cherbourg route and would like advice on routes to Italy. We are hoping to tour the regions as far down as Pisa. We would like advice on sites or free stopovers that members can recommend. Thanks

Gerry , we have never been to Italy in the van so I can only supply second hand info.

We met a couple from Ireland kin France last year who had just come up from Italy. They mentioned it was very difficult to find anywhere to stay without booking. They claimed it was not like France with campsites and stopovers in most villages.

Mark thanks for the welcome. I have spoke to some people who have been to Italy but they went further south. They tell me that they have Aire type stopovers but that they are not plentiful. They also say that it is very busy during August as that is the Italian holiday month but we will be travelling in May/June.

Keep the campsite "Marina di Venezia" in mind if you're up in the North East of Italy. Its a very well organised site with onsite supermarket, bars & restaurants etc.. Its located right next to a massive beach so if you're into surfing or watersports, or maybe you'd prefer just taking long early morning walks, its perfect... We weren't camping, but instead we hired a mobile home with A/C.
The touring area of the campsite is huge and well appointed. If you have kids, they'll love it here with a massive pool complex and things to do all day. Not sure of site fees for touring vans, you might get that info from their website...
The campsite is only a short boat ride from venice and all it has to offer.

People I know who have gone to Italy in MH's have all said book sites in advance (they dont do wildcamping) as the sites get very busy in the summer months, but everyone of them loved the place. Each one of them went via Belgium, Germany, Switzerland into Itlay. They say that while Switzerland had lovely scenery etc it was very expensive for road tolls. all of them say they will go back but take a different route to cut out Sitzerland.

I'll do one better, heres a link to a traveller review I made on tripadvisor (crowleyfamily) -

http://www.tripadvisor.ie/Show…eneto.html

Heres a google map link to the site -

https://maps.google.ie/maps?q=…1&t=h&z=16

45.43743,12.438819

We were so vexed by this place, we're going back AGAIN next year... Loved it.
And we're the kind of people that try to avoid going to the same place twice.. "big world out there" and all that... highly recomend this place...

Been to italy last 4 years in july usually to one of the 3 lakes really have had no problems getting
on sites, dont think you will have any problems at the time you are travelling.Only issue we have had is getting pitches with big enough amps to run ac unit these seem to get booked first, always have traveled down through belgium, germany, austria then italy, went home via switzerland last year and got charged 40 euro at the border but didnt encounter a lot of tolls.Fuel in italy expensive paid 1.89 euro in places

For free stopovers in Italy it's worth having a look at Fattore Amico, the Italian version of Brit Stops. This offers motorhomers the opportunity of staying overnight at farms, vineyards, restaurants, etc. at no charge to the motorhomer for the stopover.

The book contains hundreds of sites spread all over Italy, and costs 35 euros from them. You can also buy it from Vicarious Books in the UK at £26.99.

HTH

Steve :-)

PS the book comes out every February, so I'd wait till then for next year.

The Mont Blanc tunnel is a pricey one if you have to go through it rather than over the pass should it be closed with snow

Camping cars one-way: €46.40, return €58.30

We went through the mont blanc tunnell in 2009. We paid 48e then .........and we were on our own. Signs around Chamonix were sayin tunnel was closed due to flooding but on leaving our site the owner said to go up and they may let us through. Well......they did and it was funny thinking how the day before we had trekked around the top of it and next day were driving under it . MAD.
If you are in Chamonix you may want to give it a day or two. It's a beautiful town and well worth a couple of days. There's a train ride and the ski lifts are well worth a look if your into walking.
We were due to stay overnight on an aire but reckoned it was too nice to just pass through.
We stayed on site 15 mins walk from town centre called Mer de Glace.....N45'56'18.0 Eoo6'53'24.0 a beautiful site with great views of Mont Blanc and a lovely walk / cycle along the river to town centre. The site wasn't cheap but facilities were perfect and numerous walks from the site.....plus that view.
We stayed at Lake Garda but for love or money can't find coordinates of site or it's name.....sorry. It on the southern end of the lake with access from the site onto the lake from site. Around the lake can be expensive to eat out..........but if you go back a mile or so from lake shore you can find very reasonable restaurants and a meal for two .... 3 courses for 25e /30e
I envy you your trip. Hope this us of some use. P. S. Traffic around Turin is mad ......be aware.

Lots of sites around the lakes but on garda the best sites i find to the south basically because of the amenities, amps, lakeside pitches and usually about 0.5km to nearest village one such site would be La Querica although quite a large site with olympic pool, slides etc we found it extremely quiet.Lasize would be the local village with great resturants and river boat taxis docking regularly which would enable you to explore the other towns and markets.

Lake maggiore we stayed near Cannobio at a site called camping riviera / riviera valle romantica small site with pitches right on the beach and a short walk to the village.
These are sites we would return to on each lake hope this helps a little.
