11kg Propane gas - galway area

Hi everyone
I'm a new to the campervan club , as I only bought mine about two months ago. One of my gas bottles is empty and I am trying to get find a source, my issue is that all the gas suppliers I have been to so far do supply propane but not with the correct ( for my van) connector on top . I have attached pictures of my empty cannister with the regulator. Can anyone point me to a supplier in galway or surrounding areas that can supply this.

It might be easier just to change your regulator? I had to change mine when I got my van as the gas tank had an odd ball fitting.

Give Ger Walters Fuels in Limerick a ring (near Thomond Park) - they have all sorts - 061-455276

I think you should change the regulator too, get the screw on type, it's much easier to get bottles, I don't think I've ever seen one like that, is your van post 2004, if so it should have a built-in regulator and you will only need a pig tail

Pop yourself into Martyn’s Fuels on the Tuam Rd, right next to Walsh’s Heating & Plumbing and get your gas there. Then pop into Walsh’s and get yourself a regulator to match if you van’s one doesn’t. Your only talking €6 ish. Hold onto your old regulator, you never know when you might need it again.

Do I need a gas technician to change the regulator, is it a big job?

Not necessary ,if you show a photo of your regulator and hose assy.

That’s a butane connection on a propane bottle. There are a few around, but rare. Change your pigtail/ regulator, as stated previously, is the simplest option

I went down to Martyns Fuels, and showed the guy there the picture of the bottle/ connector. He said I had no chance of getting one of those. He said I should just use Butane instead.

I have attached pictures of the regulator in my campervan, yes it looks like a butane one.

Is it ok to just flip over from propane to butane in the van?

I have never seen a regulator like that. I notice the 50mbar sticker which seems very high pressure. Mine is only 30 or so. Might need to be careful how your equipment in the van reacts to a lower pressure regulator being put on. Im no gas technician but I think that may have caused some of the problems I had with my original gas boiler when I switched to a slightly higher pressure regulator. Go with propane if you can as it freezes at a much lower temperature than propane. So propane makes more sense in Ireland than Portugal!

Looks like you have been running propane on a butane regulator so you should be able to use butane bottles

Oops I missed the 50 mb sticker, propane is usually 37mb

If you plan on using your van over winter you should stick with propane and switch to a propane regulator. Butane does not operate below 4 degrees.

That looks to me what we would call patio gas ,my daughter got a new BBQ in Woodies recently and the regulator look exactly like that one in the picture .just take off the clip and fit a propane regulator.

Many older German vans had 50 mb system what ever regulator the the op ends up using it'll need to be 50 mb


Would his appliances not work on 37mB?

Well Martyns Fuels do supply propane cylinders to fit that regulator as it is the same regulator type I use, other than mine being 37mB, and I usually get my gas cylinders at Martyns.

filling station on the dock road does them, so does the fillingstation in the centre of oranmore

So if the OP’s regulator does in fact fit the patio gas cylinders, available at B&Q and other outlets, could she not just get the patio gas? Patio gas is just Propane, so she would have the benefits of winter usage, as well as being able to keep the original regulator.

Its not the same as a patio gas regulator (Ive just looked at mine) The best descrioption of it is a butane regulator on a propane bottle.

When we bought the first Motorhome it had the same regulator as yours and no gas cylinder, I thought it was the normal yellow butane gas bottle which I used in it for five years without any problem, summer, winter and it never froze either. The first I heard of propane was when there was a red cylinder in the current van.

True enough, as Chausson puts it, just get the gas that fits. Worry about operating temperatures if and when it ever becomes an issue.
