We are just home from a great week touring Scotland. Not a penny was spent on campsites, it is a fantastic area for wild camping. Thare are secluded stop over spots everywhere, and even in towns local people do not object to motorhomes overnighting, even the police were helpful in suggesting safe spots to stay.
I will post a list of place names and co-ordinates next week, (after hallow een party)

did much the same myself during the summer - only we spent every other night in a campsite to charge batteries and get a decent shower.

no problems any where

edit to add

except one morning when we were woke at first light by Grouse under the van and a night when a Roe deer walked within 10 feet of the van sending the dog mad

if you keep the grouse in the van it saves you going out to refill

Scotland is awsome, its the getting there for a short break that proves expensive with the expensive prices the ferry companies charge. Time we had a tunnel between here and there with euro tunnel prices :-)

North of Scotland to Orkney cost us £56 for 6m van and 2 pasengers (one way) its the same sort of distance as Larne - Stranraer so how come Larne -Stranraer is 3 times the price?

Its cheaper if you are an Orkney resident (subsidised by the government)

Its hardly as if the trip to Orkney offers any economies of scale.

In a similar fashion you travel by plane from NI to mainland UK and you get hit with air passenger tax the Scottish government travel from Orkney to MAinland Scotland (if you are an Orkney resident) and you get a 40% discount!

The North Channel must be the most expensive stretch of water in the world!

Pity I hadnt sunbscribed before our trip to scotland, week long, this would have put my mind at ease.

we got ferry at larne to cairnryan, 284€, do not buy sterling on ferry as my husband got totally ripped off!! live and learn!!!

We parked up at Ayr (robert burn museum), Kilmarnock (dean castle carpark), Irvine (at the first carpark on the beach), Croy Bay, only carpark, castle douglas....all without a problem, not a penny spent on sites...pulled in for a few on first day and shocked at prices £25 to £46.99...bought bottled water in large supermarkets n never needed esb. spent our money on food and icecreams!!!!

Fab spots with plenty to enjoy, defo join national trust as some fab places on it....
